Thai Economy Faces Turbulence From China Ban on Group Tours

Thailand’s economy faces fresh turbulence after China banned outbound group tours to try and limit the spread of the novel coronavirus that’s sickened thousands.

Chinese holidaymakers -- many on group tours -- spent almost $18 billion in Thailand last year, more than a quarter of all foreign tourism receipts, government data show. The industry as a whole contributes 21% to gross domestic product, according to the World Travel & Tourism Council.

Both tourism and exports were already under pressure from a surge in the Thai currency.

    Disarray
over the annual budget is another obstacle for growth. The government has rolled out more than $10 billion of stimulus steps in the past few months to cushion the economy, which the Bank of Thailand estimates expanded at the weakest pace in five years in 2019.

Well they've been moaning about them for years because they're wise to too many of the rip offs.

    Problem solved.

i'm sure the thai will find a way to make up for their financial losses.

    they usually do.

perhaps by raising hotel, food, drink and day trip prices for future tourists.

Eventually, the balloon will burst and the grotesque model of overmanning that permeates almost every level of its services based economy will collapse creating an environment that shall challenge the existing socio-economic orthodoxy.

The Thai expenditure on public services, education and health has been poor in relation to their needs and of course corruption bleeding a significant proportion of budgets into the pockets of thieves does not assist. In the end taxes will have to rise and something radical will have to be done in modernising education and the approach to healthcare.

Either they will have to introduce a general medical practice system of small GP surgeries offering non-invasive treatments or build many new public hospitals, the current system is at breaking point.

Something has to give but as ever with a compliant and stupid people things will muddle on through for another century.......

Have to ask yourself, which economic sector suffers the most during a tourism associated slowdown.
It ain't the greater portion of the everyday population - no such beast as the make believe trickle down theory.

Yet, repeated loud and often enough.

They make up over 60% of tourists and supply 25% of receipts . . . interesting

Do you think no one pays the hotels (and they're hardly all "chink" owned)? Even if some are Chinese-owned I'm guessing you think they don't pay their staff . . . oh, or they use only Mainland Chinese staff, the crafty little buggers, eh.
If they fly Thai Airways they fly for free?
I'm guessing you think the petrol used by busses is free, even if pre-paid in China.

Ah, the "Japs" . . . same there. Last year alone it was AUD3.7 billion. Do you think this simply appears? I'm guessing they all stayed in Japanese-owned hotels . . .

Along with your overt and base racism you clearly have no idea how financial transactions work

By your logic it doesn't matter if one or 20 million Chinese tourists come to Thailand as they are

Hmm... what is wrong with this picture - the Chinese account for 60% of the tourists but only 25% of the receipts. Better call in the TD CSI unit to get to the bottom of this abnormality.

By the way, anybody know how much the Indians spend?
