RAYONG (NNT) - After the Committee on Energy Policy Administration (CEPA) approved the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand’s (EGAT) proposal to import 200,000 tons of liquefied natural gas (LNG) for power generation, the first cargo of LNG was shipped to Thailand. The importation of LNG will help reduce the the fuel tariff (FT) rate on electricity use, by 0.01 satang per unit.

The EGAT organized an event to receive the shipment of 65,000 tons of LNG at PTT’s LNG terminal in Map Ta Phut subdistrict in Rayong province.

The LNG is to be used for electricity production at Bang Pakong and Wang Noi power plants. The second shipment of another 65,000 tons will be distributed to Bang Pakong, Wang Noi and South Bangkok power plants. The move is in line with the government’s policy to connect natural gas pipelines and feed gas to LNG stations and third parties, following the liberalization of the Thai gas pipeline market.

The EGAT requires about 1 million tons of LNG annually. Its board is to consider purchasing 600,000 tons of LNG next year and another million in 2021. The gas will be used to produce electricity at South Bangkok and Bang Pakong power plants.
