For us it comes one direction most of the day and reverses in the evening, the so what is that if you intend to plant fragrant flowers, and here specifically Frangipani ( which are very easy to grow and propagate) then try to position then so that the breeze if you have one carries the scent to the house or your outside area when they flower. They are quite nice structurally so have interest when not flowering and can be planted close to the house as they are not a dense plant so will likely not harbour mozzies.
Actually, is still relevant and part of the house build as in house and garden.

No good building the 'homestead and then maintaining a wasteland around it.

I don't know much about gardening, I admit so suggestions are, as I said welcome.

At the minute, the only thing planted is the banana tree that was originally part of that initial monk visit!

Oh... and mango land mango trees, now suitably lopped and ready for some new growth.

A blank canvas awaiting you gardening artists..what could be better!!?

yes..Frangipani is one that PJ wants so will be included.

OK...someone said... back to the build so..here goes...

    My wish was K.Pot's command

    Some shots with 'scaffold off'!

They just started here - zone 2 front will be the last cos the're still doing the balcony

Zone 1 is off though... here looking at master bedroom upstairs, and dining room downstairs

End on zone 1, looking into bedroom 1 and dining room folding doors. Balcony is not yet finished upstairs

It;s off at the back too. here looking at Bedroom 2 upstairs and kitchen downstairs

even the sala looks bare and light without the spaghetti junction of scaffold wrapping it up

TD that's looking great, the finish is going to be top. Ref the sala stairs, are the rails being capped in wood?

What might be expected for the lower cemented floor, TP?

    Glaze?
    Ceramic?
    Paint.....

Since you're spending all this money, would've be nice to see the whole shabang done in wood -
I know - it's terribly expensive, these days, to build 95-97% wood.

I've done this in the past and present.
A full bodied finished wooden presence has quite connective and romantic way about it.

Not for everyone - taste, ascetics, affordability, etc.

You're lovely project is coming along nicely - starting to look like something.
    Cheers.

hi Huang and thanks for the kind words and encouragement.

The flooring was all selected the last time i was in BKK.... all from Bunthavorn and good prices throughout. K.Pot is on with fitting them now

With regards to the lower half of the house, I agonized over this for quite some time..... try to do it all like the top half, or a different pattern, or render and paint.

Render and paint won out... eventually it will get several coats of Magnolia which goes with the upper half.

of course, I would have loved to do this all in wood but the cost was simply too prohibitive and i spent a long time deliberating as to if I could stretch to it.

I think my alternative idea, which K.Pot brought to life for me is a pretty good, and a considerably cheaper option!

We always said, from day 1 that we wanted the best of all worlds - traditional looks from the times of Lanna and Ayutthaya but with state of the art materials, as much as anything... to show it can be done.

She will still have the Thai incinerator outside (tradition) and i will have a bells and whistles kitchen inside, we got the look of old Thailand (tradition) but without the creaks and poor insulation , the roof looks trad but in the roof void are 2 separate layers of insulation to minimise heat transmission. The Q-con blocks also insulate the heat getting in.

Next is the boundary wall... that's part 4. We need that to enhance the security.

After that , probaby the pool, but maybe zone 3, before he up's the quote!

The more yours progresses it wears me out, my plans become inversely proportional. Fils wood shack house is starting to have its appeal.

TD, no complaints from me, you're gonna have a lovely place and you both deserve to enjoy it. Done my fair share of gypsying and you can't beat your own place.

The place is starting to look better and better you must be very happy with the result so far (obvious from your posts).
What I was wondering is if you have found out how the stair posts were fixed to or into the concrete?
Also in picture below there appears to be "loops" on top of the bottom piece of steel between the top 2 post, what is the plan there?

Morning ootai, hows things with you?

OK, number 1... err..no... not hiding it but I have not been able to find out how it was fixed yet, largely because K.Pot has been away (hence that flooring fcuk-up) and I only deal with him through PJ.

It will come though, same as I will get the paint can photos so that there is a reference for what was used to create the wood effect on those upper walls.

Number 2... those are actually fixing brackets - i will try to post a picture later.

The steps to the sala have wooden paneling (Is that the right word?) each side, in keeping with Thai Lanna structures of the period.

The right word. Can be tread and riser wood clad or just tread with painted riser. Same with skirting. Enjoy. Another decision.

    Master BR Balcony

We had to cut all the chances to fall from height while the construction was ongoing (OK..me, obviously, not them)

They started work on the BR1 balcony

This was the inspiration for the balcony and I sat with K.Pot and we got an agreement on how to do it.

Iooking our to the balcony from inside the bedroom

I think he's on the right lines with his version of that balcony picture I gave him...

Sorry if you mentioned it somewhere in there I did not re-read everything but was wondering... we need a few more build threads on here to keep it interesting for the readers!!

I don't think anybody wants any comparison between their future shack and your mansion ......
We should have been up in Ubon and started by now, but The Stepdaughter got herself in to a bit of legal trouble so we are still in Bangkok for a while till that is sorted out. Looking at February for the move now, don't know if we will get started on the house before wet season but at least I will be able to get going on the garden.

Its a very small 'mansion', Mike lol.

No matter what you build, its good if you can make start... it 's a great feeling when the journey begins and an even better one when you get to my stage and the end really is in sight!.

I hope the stepdaughter trouble is nothing too serious - good luck for that.

TD you'd better get on the phone immediately, its a disaster. The balcony work has gone horribly wrong and could even result in potential serious or even fatal injury. The gap at the bottom of the square bar horizontals adjacent to the floor are wide enough to allow empty beer bottles to roll underneath and brain anyone not wearing a hard hat.
