I don't know Dennis, don't even know what we paid 'cos SWMBO was in charge of the funds that day. I was too busy capturing* the helpful PEA ladies (see previous photo) which i though was also important... there.s a receipt somewhere so I will seek it out...

If they were post cages... double wow!! The boundary wall is only 2.5m max

yep, piles it is though its a case of ensuring we get down to 'the hard stuff' without joining together. So yeah..10m cages

Yes I know could be better to do tit differently but,,hes given the price to put 50-odd piles down to the solid underlying so its up to him... some might be nearly all the 10m, some might be a lot less, but the fixed price was extremely reasonable, as he owns all his own equipment so no x-hiring. I was happy, so hes doing the job.

Incidentally the fixed price was less than the commercial pile company I located 10km away from the site

    Humm ... maybe I'm mis-understanding.

Say the pile, vertical fence post is 10 metres long. The Fence 2.5 high.

So, you are putting a pile 7.5 metres into the ground to support a fence?
I understand that not all will be that deep.

No trying to be smart, just trying to understand. Everyone builds differently.

This is something I haven't seen before, what I've seen before, they make small loops or rectangular rebar in a jig and tie to columns, wrapping rebar in a coil is different. I guess quicker if you have a way to make the spirals.

Hey TD, finally another active build thread to go with morning cuppa... Don't forget the Lao khao, incense, and pig's head offering to the land spirits before digging any deep holes, you don't want to be upsetting 'those who shall not be talked about'!

Jonny! thanks for stopping by.. yeah we will try to maintain the daily blow by blow account for the whole 275 days - not easy when I am in Dubai, but lets give it a try! You are right - a drink's too wet without a good story to help it along, so I will attempt to oblige!

Thanks for the reminder - the 'offering ' ceremony is taking place on the 15th February, after consultation with the monks. She's already ordered 2 pigs heads, 2 ducks , 2 chickens, and lord knows what else (!), and + the booze so that we can be sure of a good luck boost for the duration! The kids were sorting out the 'gold' (well, coinage) we will be burying in the foundations. I will be attending digitally via Skype (best I can do as i only just returned back from 17 days in LOS!).

Pictures of that event will follow. I am slightly behind on the photos because I am so busy here. Shes sending them, I'm just having trouble finding time to edit and post. (*note to self - must do better*)

Hi Dennis - this builder is turning out to be a better than expected choice (OK its still early days) as he has a huge amount of equipment, so no hiring, borrowing or buying. I'm expecting him to roll up with a concrete pump for when we do the upper slabs. He's got a crane, and a lot of other kit already on site. His company is a proper building / engineering outfit and so far anyway, it shows.

I have not even described or shown his 'woodworking' skills yet which was another reason why we went with him. That's to come soon.

Well...there's a first time for everything, and even if the snake population has been obliterated, there will always be Tom Yum Lizard as a fall-back. Yum yum...you know it makes sense....

    Lol, no probs David...

You were saying 'pile' or 'post'... i was saying the only 'posts' we will do short term are the boundary wall posts so unlikely to need 10m...

OK.. this is the story. the OrBorTor engineer said the strong lower layer in the building zone could be 6-7m down. We then added 1m of fill (covered in an earlier part of this thread). So, up to 7-8m down. It's the great unknown even on the plot potentially wildly varying depths (his words, not mine). When I put this to the builder during the contract negotiations, he said he would plan a 10m pile and if it was less he will be cropping it anyway.

No 'charge / m' or costing based on how much he digs of places. It was a fixed cost for the job, the job being placing the piles, cropping as necessary, creating the pile caps, and completing the slabs for zone A, B and C even though we are only building zone A and B at this time.

His lump sum cost for this was very reasonable (less than we were quoted by the other pile /concrete company 10km away) so we went for it. I like knowing in advance the costs - I dont like surprises, especially if it involves 'we need extra money, etc etc!). If the pile placement is shallow, as a couple have been, he will simply cut off the remaining cage and use it again , so nothing is really wasted.

The Orbortor engineer has already been out to site and confirms that the operation is going correctly

The boundary wall is up to 2.5M tall, so definitely will not need a 10M pile! I was being a bit tongue-in-cheek about that. sorry...

    Hey DM...welcome back!!

Thanks for that, yeah I believe they equally share the grasshoppers-on-sticks, and they share the accommodation & sleeping arrangements too... wait a minute... 275 days is ...around.... err...9 months... I hope there is not an explosion in the staff numbers (junior division) at the end...

I'm sure the pay is equal but maybe thats not fair as they seem to be doing all the work!!

Thanks for the good wishes and encouragement - I will try to keep the story interesting for all...

    Steel and cement

The good thing is, its not too soft and slippery underfoot - that time for the land settling was worth it.

Its being used straight away, but there is plenty of room for lay-down if needed.

    Let's get that cement off...

    ...and into some dry storage.

Getting the money ready for the ceremony...

Meanwhile, back in Bangkok, the junior Project Managers were, ummm... dealing with 'fiscal matters'...

It's calm so far...normally they are fighting...

"Hey! how come I have only the small coins? "

OK OK gold coins all round - peace restored.

Finally they made a few sets like his...

Hi Dennis, yes, I think this is his forte... and hes STILL not wearing the company T-shirt- what a rebel.

You got it - rebar chairs to keep the slab rebar mesh in the middle of the slab and surrounded by concrete, not lying on the soil where the groundwater will rot the metal in a few years...

K.Pot is planning ahead. Make a load of them now - he will need them for the ground floor slab soon, and the first floor slab later.

Although it is still a little way off, once the piles are all in place and hes cast those pile caps, he will be coming off that with the ground floor ring beam and then the slab construction itself at which point, yes, he will need the chairs
