On a brighter note , this tunnel will be ready for next year and will drain of Lad Prao , Ramkamheng and the east and there are 3 others being built for Huay Kwang , and Don muang and Ratchada .

Just got a call from another TD member who lives 4 kilometres away in Sai Noi to the north of Bangyai.

Last night he went to bed fairly confident that even if the floods breached his village defenses it would only be to a depth of a few inches.

He is now preparing to evacuate his house with his wife and child as the water is about to enter the house and all the drains are backed up.

Looking out of our window this morning everything is still bone dry but I noticed people scurrying around with planks and sandbags. I decided to investigate Bangyai town centre and our immediate vicinity.

Everywhere here still bone dry but there is a flood of traffic converging on Bangyai from nearby areas already underwater ! All the roads are packed with cars and the small bridges have become parking lots.

On the way home I stopped off at the park and hefted 4 large unused curbstones into the boot of the car to lay across the porch as a last ditched barrier in case we are the next ones to cop it. I'll grout them in as soon as I see any water. In the meantime, keeping our fingers cross.

7:15 this morning the company told us all to go home and not consider coming back until Tuesday. We know they know something we don't but essentially the word was ' can't ignore the inevitable, Bangkok is going to get flooded' looked fine outside at the time but already word of sois flooding close to the office has come in from co-workers.

I paid 35 baht per bag two weeks ago, 60 baht per bag a few days ago in the inner city. A friend in the outskirts paid 7 baht. People who are trying to get rich from this will get a karmic reward.

The thing with sandbags is that they are not 100 % effective unless used in conjunction with a pump ....... as many people are discovering.

They stop most of the water getting through but there is always some seepage
which can soon build up without a pump.

Another problem is that while people sandbag their entrances they neglect the downstairs bathroom. If the outside water builds up , the weight of it can force water up through the ground floor bathroom drain. If you are expecting a lot of water put something heavy on this or get flooded. This happened to us last year but only a few inches. This year looks worse.

Yep, I was just watching the news from Bang Bua Tong just down the road from Bangyai. They interviewed several residents who had used sandbags but the water got through and they have given up and evacuated. They even interviewed one man who had bricked up the front of his house but the water still came through in small gaps he had missed elseware and up through the floor.

You can fight a few inches of flooding by these means but when you start talking about several feet of water you really can't keep the water out. Very few people succeed.

As for us ..... still o.k. but a look in my mapbook explains a lot. Bangbuatong and Sai noi are adjacent to the same major canal network and are both getting flooded now. I can also see that our own canal network is next in line so my guess is that Bangyai will be flooded sometime tomorrow though likely not quite as bad as Bangbuatong.

All the big stores here have been virtually picked clean and will not be open tomorrow. If things start looking bad I'm going to make bedroom no 3 the new kitchen. No more multi dish meals for us....just something on rice. Got a few bottles of wine in though and enough alchol to stay pissed until the waters recede

...and if you can't keep floodwater out of a house, why on earth has the government been saying it's possible to keep the water out of a city like Bangkok?
