The last 'Brit style' pub I went to was the Dubliner (OK, it's Irish themed). Had a Guinness and an admittedly nice Irish breakfast there- and no, I knew nothing of the ownership at the time. Way overpriced, even then (3-4 years back). I doubt I will ever go to one again, at least not in rip-off Bangkok.

Cheap Charlies or beer bars for me. Maybe the odd GoGo.

The thing many Brits seem to forget when they moan about over-priced bars in Bangkok is that in truth inflation over the years hasn't had that much impact upon beer pricing.
What has changed is the exchange rate which of course has fallen out of bed for the £ since those halcyon days of 2006 when 68-70ish was the norm. Prices in the Londoner then were around the 160 - 170 baht mark for a pint of draft Heineken which is not that much less than the post-happy hour price in many establishments these days.

Happy hour prices these days mean most pubs are offering pints at 100baht which for a capital city with high rents means a buyers' market.

If i walk into a bar at midday for lunch and a few pints and see sticky notes saying table reserved at 5pm.
I walk straight out again i am not drinking in no fecking bar with idiots like that drinking in there.

at least in the old dubliner the fat loud boozy crimson complexioned brits and micks with their slapper wives or airheaded tarty, tattooed thai arm-candy bints were where they belonged, that is indoors and well out of sight of the general public passing by.

in the "new" dubliner these people are, or were, outside on the veranda and on show to the bewilderment of the passers by, the infinitely more presentable and sophisticated european and japanese expats of the neighbourhood

When I went there for Sunday roast it was full of Backpackers from Scandinavia

Writing on a post it note everyday leaving on a table in a bar is a very stupid self imposed rule.

....Speaking of difficulty paying salaries, word is that the closure of The Dubliner is because they were several months behind on the rent. The Dubliner had been having difficulty for some time and suppliers were insisting that alcohol was paid for on delivery - and that goes back to well before I left Bangkok. What I am hearing now is that the fight that broke out at the start of Songkran was between The Dubliner's well-known owner and the landlord of the property. A few people around town have smirks on their faces about the whole situation, given the rumours that have plagued The Dubliner for years - and I don't mean the rumours about those who believe that all of Ireland should be an independent republic - but the other set of rumours.

Strong rumours had it that The Dubliner sold this week for 9.5 million baht but the person who was said to have bought it denies it, although he admits to being interested in it. He states that a protracted court battle between The Dubliner and the landlord means a deal cannot be done at this time.

We visited the bar on 15th April 2016 around 7pm with my two friends from the UK to get some food, on sitting down the following happened:

• The person calling himself the owner of the establishment goes crazing with a group of customers and tells them to get out of his bar.
• A ‘handbag’ middle aged scuffle breaks out between 50 to 60 year old grown men, with the tenant/owner who should all know better….muppets.
• The tenant/owner is shouting and screaming obscenities like a madman at the guys for 20mins before security finally escorted them out.
• Then the tenant/owner stamps round the bar for another 10 minutes telling more customers to get out because they touched him during the scuffle.
• Then one of the original scuffle customers came back to apologise.
• The tenant/owner goes mental again for 15mins shouting all sorts of obscenities and obscene words at the guy until security usher him away.
• During all this time we sat in disgust and amazement!!!!
• Since it was my friends first time in Bangkok they were terrified, seen lots of bad stuff on the news in England and assumed the worse.
• Knowbody offered any apologies, a free beer of our bill for free, which would be the normal recourse anywhere else in the world.
• The tenant/owner acted disgracefully during the altercation and walked passed us at least 5 times like a prize fighter entering the ring, this guy was 55 years old at least for god sake.

We have lived and worked in Bangkok for 10 years and visited this establishment many times and we have never seen such unprofessional behaviour in this bar, Thailand or anywhere for that matter.

I have since learned that the tenant/owner is new to the bar. Well Sir, I think you should stay away from your bar or enrol in a bar management course and some anger management treatment as well before returning.

To everybody that visits Bangkok: There is really no need to go to this bar when the Royal Oak and the Robin Hood are next door.

Or take your riot outfit if the tenant/owner is there!!

Disgraceful!!!!

Since we moved its either Denny's or the Robin Hood and we only normally call in around midday after i have stocked up with cider from Villa.
Funny i just seemed to have got bored with drinking out these days.

That trip advisor writer had better get a clip behind his ear for mocking Mr Big, the writer doesn't respect the hard nuts that settle in Thailand, most are past champion prize fighters back home.
The writer failed to see the Gladiators in action in Bangkok, describing them in disrespectful tones.
Hope that young whippersnapper of a boy writer never crosses with the TD keyboard toughs on here.

Herritys Bangkok ? The Best Irish Bar & Hotel in Bangkok



After a full refit, Herrity’s Irish Pub now open in the location on Sukhumvit Soi 33/1 that was once home to The Dubliner.

They have done a terrible thing at that bar by demolishing the wall separating the outside area from the main bar a la the Royal Oak next door. I hate that arrangement and in the stifling heat of a sweaty Bangkok night it's just so fucking stupid - air con "wall" system of cooled downward air at the boundary between inside and out never works properly and the stink of folk smoking outside drifts back in.

Its fine for the usual crew of fat - bellied, braying expat slobs swilling their beer in their loud-mouthed cliques of dreary sporting obsessions who eventually will take over this hostelry but for everyone else who has to put up with their ghastliness it's a bore.

As I understand it, it comes as no surprise they have done this since a co-partner in the venture is the owner of the Royal Oak, Nicky.

An acquaintance of mine went there recently to try out their burgers - he's an American - and he concluded it was probably the worst he has eaten in the city, and expensive too.

Say what you might think about the ownership of the old Dubliner but in its heyday it was at least an alternative to the Fat, Loud-Mouthed Expats 'R Us Boozer next door.

It's very nice today by the pool, positively Mediterranean and scarcely a cloud in the sky with a delightfully refreshing breeze to take the edge of the afternoon sun's heat. The sea is awash in iridescence and the birds in our grounds are chirruping and whooping away in happy harmony.

Must be near to happy hour beer sundowner time.

And to think one could be shivering one's balls off in some ghastly English November, grey skied misery of a winter populated by cretins.
