Correct. The landlord put up the rental when the lease was renewed. The Bulls Head owner(s) got stroppy and refused to pay the new rate, but kept paying the old one. The landlord went to court and had them evicted.

The BH owner(s) were idiots. Managed to chuck away a (reasonably) successful 15+ year old business by getting into a dispute which they couldn't win and having no backup plan for when they lost.

What was funny was that the Landlord waited until the day before the BH was to have a closing party and just after a large stock of beer, drinks and food had been delivered for the party - he sent the bailiffs in who seized everything and kicked them out.

That's how I heard it, although all the old regulars tend to have slightly differing stories.

Or been told by the Central characters.......

The BH were arrogant, thought they would never get taken to task for their stunts especially due to a long relationship between one of the BH owners and the landlord's son who essentially was pulling the strings.

They were taken to court and found against, which gave the landlord the right to do what he did regarding the bailiffs.

A friend of mine was here when they pulled the BH kitchens apart, said it was disgusting, a dead rat and a deep fat fryer set up that drained the grease filters back into the fryer. Shame, I preferred the BH for what it was as I think the RO doesn't quite come up to scratch for what it wants to be. Now that Jimmy is back managing that side of the old RH group things should improve, but I've given up alcohol for the time being so I don't frequent any of them at the moment.

    At least it was dead.

I remember one night sitting at the bar next to the cashier and the dumb waiter came down from the kitchen behind her and beeped it's arrival. She was busy doing a bill, so just raised the door without looking.

Inside was a rat on one of the shelves enjoying a plate of fish and chips. I looked at it and then called out "who ordered the rat?". The cashier looked around, saw the rat and slammed the door shut.

Are you suggesting she was saving it for herself later?

I note the DUBLINER on Sukhumvit has finally closed its doors. I was there on opening night in 2000 which was attended by Denis Taylor, ex-world snooker champion.
    The following from the website:

The Dubliner gives a huge thanks to everyone for the tremendous support over the years.
We are relocating to Sukhumvit 33/1 only i min from BTS Phompong station and we are going bigger and better so you can have more of the best Irish pub and restaurant in Bangkok.
Our new venue"Dubliner Place" will be a proper Boutique Hotel.

Yep, the building works on the new site are progressing, quite a cost to the works already, between the Robin Hood and the new complex in 33/1. Quite some change to that Soi in the last year.

Still won't be going there however.

I hear there will be a dubliner hotel there as well, what with the incredible rent they are paying for the site and the fitting out costs one wonders how they will turn a profit.

Never liked the dubliner, although had some good breakfasts there in the early days.

There was something unclean about the place.

The Black Swan is my favourite British boozer in BKK, nice selection of drinks, pleasant clientele, had a few chats with David about football, although with Sheffield United in league 1, not so much to talk about!

I also had a poor experience there..... the dubliner........ last week.

Gripped by a hunger and a desire for a fry up and being close by, I thought I would give the place a try. First and last time.

One runny fried egg and one fried solid, greasy meats and awful bread, the generous portion of chips was soft and soggy.

A shameful performance considering the price.

An admittedly rather half hearted complaint brought a simpering hand wringing performance from the mick which did little to assuage my nausea or disappointment.

Why is it that every brit/mick pub has to look and feel exactly the same.

The no idea on soi 22, knocks these awful dinosaurs for six.

All these places are total shite now. They are cutting costs and having to run happy hours to get punters in any quantity - something the Dubliner and also the Londoner for that matter never did before save for the odd night or two. They boost food prices to claw in profits and given the transient trade is what they are after they couldn't give a toss about quality. The Dubliner turned to dross long before it moved. Overpriced ersatz Irish shite no self respecting Paddy would recognise as food.

Outside of happy hours most of these places are now more expensive to drink in than even parts of London for Brits struggling with their £ yet the product is often at a derisorily low level of quality

I stopped eating in these places over a year ago and only frequent them for drink during happy hour after which most are moribund anyway unless a promotion is running all night. One wonders what on earth they'll do after high season ends and the only punters of note will Chinese,Japs,Taiwanese and Koreans.

Pattaya is far better now and still has decent places offering a sound greasy spoon breakfast at realistic prices.

One should never eat in any faux Brit/ bogus Irish joints. Burger King, McD, MosBurger et al offer much better.

There are two exceptions though, Durty Nellies and the Black Swan where quality is still an aim although prices can be challenging for those just looking for a quick pub bite.

The queen vic. on soi 23 does decent food, their fry ups are superb. But take some antidepressants before you go, the moon has more atmosphere than that place. Its grim.

A meal, a quick browse through the times and the daily mail, and then out, definately not a place to linger in.

The British pub's days are numbered in Bangkok and, certainly, if they are to survive then location is all.
In the not too distant past they weren't so thick on the ground and with passing trade the owner could count on decent profits augmented by his regular custom from numerous expats from all over Europe working in engineering and construction. Those days have gone now and the demographic with it.

The Queen Vic. is a case in point. Nowhere really in the scheme of things. Soi Cowboy is mainly patronised by pan heads from Asia and they aren't the chaps to hang out in a British boozer between leching forays. Its footprint is dependent upon passing locals and those visiting the several decent restaurants up that end but again, having a couple of pints before troughing in the Dalat isn't on many folk's agenda.

Quite why anyone goes up So 11 is beyond me. That Australian place is ghastly and walking up there is almost impossible now the road is clogged with those shite pop up mobile bars peddling cheap counterfeit drinks to gormless tourists who know no better. If it wasn't for Limoncello I'd never go again. Full of bloody wogs too.

I might try Thonglor again. It's been a while and perhaps worth a look. Trtouble with that area is no sooner do places open they bloody close again in 6 months when en vogue becomes passe.

After 6 months the place would probably be a goldmine. Though the Thai staff might have him beaten a to pulp one night for telling them how to do their job.

With mostly indolent thai staff who know they can walk into another job tomorrow and the many third rate falang cooks ( I refuse to use the word chef for someone who cooks food, however good the food may be) who proliferate here it is an impossible task for a dedicated manager.

Generally speaking, the only time a place works well and functions efficiently is when the staff, hopefully the majority of whom are female, is managed by a Thai woman who takes no prisoners and understands the business. The European "manager" should be there to add hospitality and oversee the operation without undermining his Thai supervisor. If wages are good and the management fair then staff will be contented. The Thai cooks are linchpins - once trained they'll be fine but must be watched like hawks lest they cut corners or,heaven forbid, use their initiative which will always resolve to a fuck up.

When I see Thai boys behind a bar my heart sinks - lazy, moody, incompetent, unhygienic and invariably silly.
