Bangkok Parks ... 1) Chalerm Phra Kiat

Everyone knows Lumphini Park or the other newer parks in the city centre but one of the nicest parks is just over the river in Nonthaburi province , on the outskirts of the urban sprawl.

Having not much to do, a friend and I planned a midweek picnic in the park. Come the day however, we succumbed to the temptation of a burger at A&W and so our picnic turned into a pleasant afternoon stroll in the completely empty park.

This park also serves as Klongmasters jogging track and in his thread on the subject he gives some excellent satellite photes of the place and so rather than repeat his efforts here is the link for those wishing to see the place for themselves .

    https://teakdoor.com/bangkok-forum/25...alermpark.html

The easiest way to get there is by taxi , about 200 baht from downtown but if you want to make a day of it you could take a regular boat up the Chao Phraya river and get off at the last stop ... Nonthaburi Pier. From there you can hire a long tailed boat to take you acroos the river to the park.

    And so :

My friend Mr. C contemplates the map at the park entrance .

As you enter the park the view to the left is very lush

Whilst straight ahead there is an interesting contrast of architecture.

The three of us decided to take a clockwise route passing Pigeonville on the way

A little further on we came to Klongmasters playground and we had a pleasant 10 minutes here without having to compete with kids.

However , we were soon distracted by the bright colour and plastic of this peculiar giant game console.

Surprisingly, it was not broken and all the nobs , buttons and sound effects worked .The three of us spend a good ten minutes trying to work out how to play but when it proved beyond our patience we resorted to kiddy tactics and just thumped everything in a one minute frenzy of violence and noise. However, anything that can withstand the attention of the elements and hoards of children was not going to break from our efforts so we went back to the swings to rest.

Refreshed a little we crossed one of the many bridges to the next island.

Which brings us to another excercise park with so many machines to try that we didn't even attempt it. Too tiring just to contemplate.

This one would be a good practice for those who have to use buses frequently

A lot of these vertical machines have pithy words of wisdom to chew over whilst you sweat.

After absorbing several of these we were off again, pleasant views continuing.

More to come in just a mo.

Actually, this park is a nice example of one of the times the Thais got it right. Very pretty indeed .

This wooden Thai style house is available to lounge about in so we started making our way there for a bit of lounging about.

But first you pass through this gate for a walk along the river terrace

And very fresh it is too .

Mr C contemplates which of the luxury homes across the river to buy. Something old with a garden or a condo with a view. Personaly, I'm indecisive so I've reserved one of each .............. for when I win the lottery.

Time for some lunch but more pictures.......the best .....yet to come.

So....heading away from the river you can relax in this very spacious Thai styled house. This would be a nice place for a picnic .....very comfortable

It was a relief to know that Mink still loves Fluk but its a shame they couldn't just text each other like everyone else.

A very pretty scene from the terrace of the Thai house

All in all a very nice place and full of flowers and plants to please the eye.

Thats the idea....unless someone else wants to do it. Can't remember the last time I was down Sukhumvit. I'll need to get a visa in advance from the gf who thinks there's too much temptation down there for a hansum bloke like me

I'll look forward to it. There's so much cement around that a nice park is a welcome relief. While you're at it can you nip around the corner and do the park on the old Tobacco Monopolies bit of land....forget its name but been there a few times

I'll look forward to that one too. I used to have a list of all Bangkoks parks but I can't find it now. I think Thonburi Rom Park is near you , near Bang Mot ( behind King Mongkots Univercity of Technology ) ? Never been there so would be nice to see some pics.

We (The family) visited King Rama IX Royal park, out at Pra Wet (Eastern suburb of Bangkok) the other weekend. Very pretty, with a large lake and a beautiful conference centre building. Lots of gardens from different nations, plenty of open spaces for picnics and a very good restaurant on the lake side. Took photos but am no good down loading them. Sorry!

I went there a few times when it was under construction and they were putting all the saplings in. I'd like to have a look at it again some time to see how all the trees have matured.

As for posting pictures .... it is a bit of a task. The first thing you need to do is make sure they are less than 1MB , then load them into your Teak Door gallery and then from there into your thread. It takes patience and perseverance until you get the hang of it and from then on its a plain convoluted hassle

Right, the Benjakiti Park is within walking distance of Benjasiri. Head up Sukhumvit towards Asoke, then turn left towards Rama 4. Park is on the right with a long lake in the middle. You can hire bicycles here for a peddle around the lake. IMO , when they were constructing this park they should have filled a bit of the lake in on the side nearest the road as that stripp is too narrow and long to sustain interest. A bit of landfill halfway up and a bridge over the lake would have allowed for more trees to put in.

Hope this map helps. Benjasiri is the small park on the right marked by the little fir tree. The big lake on the left is Benjakiti.
