Friend of mine was in the same position a few years back - wife + 2 small kids stuck in BKK while he had to work !

On the first day the hotel desk lady recommended taking the kids to an Indonesian cultural centre ( sorry - I have no idea where it was but was in or near central BKK,)

Had good food, those shadow puppets, dancing and drama with sword fights.
    The kids loved it !
    Went back every day
His little girl was 3 and the dancers kitted her out in costume etc and the boy 5 was set up as a green faced warrior

This was maybe 6 years ago - try asking the indonesian embassy - i'm pretty sure it was either run or sponsored by them .

Excellent idea, but we have already left BKK. But next time we will definitely try to remember this tip.
