Yep proper filth in that bar, i remember lady drinks were only 50 baht or something and it would be a shot of some Thai whisky plus the owner forget her name was always getting the girls out of their heads, many a memorable time in there.
^ Arrrhhhhhhh the good old days and before we become respectable fathers and husbands hey BB.
And good old Mike "Dell Boy" to lead us astray........bless his soul!
Taffy couldnt give a fuck about the hairy pie CLUB, he has opened a new hotel just around the corner, anyway he's a complete bullshit artist.
I have absolutely no idea why he continues on running it with hardly anyone going in there.
I had one beer yesterday and was trying to watch some football on his big screen TV and the picture was blue the TV is so fucked.
Maybe he does it only to annoy some people.
Just another bar that's had its day, times move on was good 7-9 years ago though.
It seems to be quite in vogue to knock Washington Square and it's denizens, especially amongst the younger set of expats here in Thailand, including Stickman (i.e the vast majority). Well I beg to differ. In a Bangkok that has become increasingly homogenous and 'modern', Washington Square is one of the few remaining hangouts of the hoary old expats- guys that have been here for many years, predominantly American, many came here first because of the Vietnam war.
I'm no squaronian, but I'm glad it's there- or whats left of it. I've had a few good nights and some interesting conversations there. In terms of the 'old' places, all thats left are Bourbon St restaurant & bar, which Doug Harrison opened in the mid 80's, and the Silver Dollar and Texas Lone Star bars. Dougs place has expanded (and gotten expensive imo) the other two pretty much stay with the old formula- you can get a good American meal there for the right price, and if you're there at the right time (because they're often very quiet these days) catch up with some interesting characters. Theres newer places of course, but I wouldn't even know them except for the Dubliner- i go there to catch up with a slice of 'old' expat Bangkok.
Of course it's days are numbered, as are those of the old timers. Sadly, the owner of one of the bars (Silver Dollar I think? edit- nope, Lone Star) passed away about 18 months back. He was a character- his staff loved him, and were very loyal. Whats left of that old scene now? Not much that I can think of- maybe the Madrid in Patpong, the Malaysia- but thats changed outta sight.
Don't knock the Square! It's got character, and characters.

Everything in Bangkok has a short shelf life. Especially in the Suk area. Old established properties disappear and up go the new condos and office complexes. The Bangkok of ten years ago has no resemblance to what one sees today. Soi Cowboy, Patpong and Nana will be next to feel the wrath of the demolition crews. Along with the buildings so the "characters" will disappear.Originally Posted by sabang
The ambiance of Washington Square not for everyone but it has/had it's appeal. Back in the day I was probably on Sabang's list of "characters".Originally Posted by sabang

I wonder which will go to the wreckers ball first- Nana or Washington Square? They're both owned by the same people.
Both been written off more times than Keith Richards, but soldier on.
Obviously Washington square, they have already flattened a good size section.Originally Posted by sabang

It'll do you good to drag that gammy leg around a bit anyways.
Always interested to hear latest news from the square- don't be a stranger.
Welcome to TD. Think I met you once, but might have been another geezer with a big hat.
Robbed a Bank in the UK?? last time i went in there was five years ago, Mekhong Kurt was some sort of promoter of a nice singer, think her name was venus or something like that, had a band plying in sq I for a time. I heard they have naked pool when the doors are closed, I assume it's just the girls.
Based upon my observation, and when sitting in Taffy's bar for 1 beer the other day I would prefer to be somewhere else when the girls he has working there now gets their gear off.Originally Posted by crazy dog
He used to have some nice girls there back around 2001, maybe they get pissed off with his antics, he is quite rude towards Thai's from what I remember, as well as permanently pissed.
Any pics of this place would be appreciated.
I have a story about Denny's bar on the corner of Soi22 and the entrance. I was in there one night a good many yrs ago and there were two pissed up lads trying to pull the girls knickers down and being rough. I said enough lads and the reply was they are only hookers. I said enough, behave yrself or go. One smashed a bottle and threatened me with the jagged end. I said I wouldn't do that if I were you, Look behind you. He replied I'm not stupid to fall for that trick but his mate said, I would if I was you.He turned around to see a cop with his hand on his gun. there was suddenly two much better behaved guys, offering to buythe girls drinks and apologising for their behavior.
Christ, if it's the Kamolvisit family don't blink or you'll miss the demolition.Originally Posted by sabang
It's not, it's the Nanapong family, two members of which I am acquianted with.Originally Posted by Norton
The part currently under demolition isn't owned by them anyway. I believe Centara (formally Central) have interests there also.
I knew that DP. Just a little sarcasm. Should have put this.Originally Posted by Dancing Priest
