Question Recommend a nice and cheap hotel in Bangkok?

Looks like we will spend a week or so in Bangkok before heading south to the family in law, so can anyone recommend a nice and cheap hotel?

We are me, the wife and 2 small children, so it needs to be more than just a backpacker joint with shared bathroom in the hallway - but it surely doesn't need to be Hilton or anything like that.

Extra points available if the hotel is close to the BTS/MRT.

Dynasty Inn on Sukhumvit Soi 4.
The neighborhood is a bit naughty but I have seen plenty of people with families there. They have a website.

Sounds like you want the Atlanta on Suk Soi 2: swimming pool, kids, great restaurant, cheap.

The Rex Hotel on Sukhumvit. Away from the sex tourists but still on the BTS. About 1200 a night , including full breakfast in the coffee shop ,for a nice room with a large double bed , fridge, cable T.V etc. The pool was recently refurbished and is a nice place to relax Its also just a short walk from the planetarium which has a few attractions that will suit the kids.
When checking in ask for a room at the back which is quieter and has a pleasant view.Look first.

The playboy hotel on Nana Nua is only about 700 a night and the rooms are nice but no pool or anything else for the kids

(but maybe it's just me who is living in a dream world where hotels still cost 200 baht/night like in the good old backpacking days)

    Hi,

I generally go to Watana Mansion, Ratchada Soi 17 oposite Suthisan MRT subway station ...

It costs around 700 bahts for a room with Air con double bed with TV and a fridge. And there's a swiming pool. The staff isn't so much friendly but it's correct.

There's a 24 hours little shop and food service, there's also a little market nearby where you can eat.

We, a few Teak Door members stayed in this hotel :::: [at] Home Place :::: last night and I think it is brilliant, close to the Sky Train, Emporium shopping plaza, good restaurants and situated in a quite side street off Sukhumvit soi 33.

At 1,200 Baht/ day a nice place and enjoy your holiday.

We always stay at the Rex, short walk to BTS (5 min), clean rooms and sheets 1200baht for the room but they only give one breakfast ticket, and hail a taxi from the street, dont use the expensive hotel taxi unless you want to see the gem shops.

Thanks for all the replies. Guess we will have to accept around 1000-1200 baht/night.

I think the Atlanta does small suites for a family of four for around 750 Baht, which includes the rather large enough swimming pool and a very child-friendly environment.

I'd never choose to stay in upper Sukhumwit with the kids and the wife. It's full of sweaty men, annoying salespeople, overpriced "English" pubs and questionable demimondaines.

I'd look at options in Chinatown near the river, around Siriraj hospital on the Thonburi side across from Tha Phrachan, lower Silom, or Thewet (four/five blocks or so north of Khao San Road).

Khao San Road proper sucks donkey balls too, as does the area around the back of Wat Chana Songkhram.

Some of the guest houses/hotels on Phra Athit Road one block west of KSR used to be alright. Not sure what they're like anymore.

Might be worth looking up Ratchada Rd ... there is a place called the Palazzo which is alright and about 1 minute walk to subway, not far from Robinson, Esplanade, and some great "entertainment venues"

    Palazzo Bangkok Hotel
