    Looking For An Oven

Was wondering if anyone had any experiences buying an oven in Bangkok? I'd like to get some recommendations of a good oven that is not too expensive. Should I be looking at western brands only, or are there some good (cheaper) Asian brands that would be reliable.

    Thanks in advance,
    Simon.

What sort of oven are you looking for exactly?

My kitchen doesn't have a built in oven so I bought a a cheap toaster oven for 990thb from the local mall. Was good for 15 months but has now stopped working altogether. It was used regularly.

I'll need to buy another but knowing the poor quality of electric devices here I will not be spending a lot of money on it.

The Thai gas ovens are extremely difficult to control the temperature, best to get an electric western brand if you take your cooking seriously.

^My electric rusty 10 year old toaster oven still works fine

I have , over the years , bought 3 ovens. The first two were made by Singer at around 5 - 6000 baht and worked just fine but were a little bulky. No problem if you have a big kitchen. In the house I live in at the moment, we have an open plan kitchen and space is at a premium so I needed something several inches narrower. The only one available was a Zanussi which I bought in Carrefour for 8500 baht. Its been very reliable and I can give it the thumbs up. Both the Singers and the Zanussi only have 3 rings but thats been enough. The oven is very useful, especially for cooking fish or spare ribs, not to mention bread and butter pudding ! Might even bake a cake one day if I can find the time.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I already have induction hotplates installed so would be looking for just the oven. Today I saw a Fagor oven advertised in a Homepro brochure for 13900 baht. Looks like it is a Spanish brand so this could be what I'm looking for. Anyone have any experiences with this brand?

Ochhhhh Signor that price is a little overheated. How about a Dutch-oven?

    New Fagor Model

Just saw that Fagor has a new cheaper model the 5H-103 X1 which is 10900 baht. It has only four functions though while the 13900 baht 5H-104 X1 has six. I saw the Fagor Brochure at Homepro but they didn't have either of these in stock and you have to order them in.

I have a Fagor built in oven, bought for a similar price to Homepro. It's fan assisted and have no complaints whatsoever. Its 18 months old now and used on a regular basis for making pies and pasties.

P.S. I originally bought a whirlpool oven. before It was fitted, it fell on the floor, breaking the door. I took it to the repairshop at Namchai, where I bought it and they told me they had to send to Italy, I think, for the parts. This was a lengthy business, so I bought the Fagor. If I had seen the Fagor first.I would have bought it. it was a lot cheaper.
Still waiting for the whirlpool now, would you believe !

Having struggled with this issue for many years, we finally went whole hog and bought a regular Western brand oven from HomePro. Can't remember the brandname (American brand) off the top of my head but we paid close to B20,000 or so.

Been perfect thus far, except I can still burn food. Hell, who reads the directions anyway...

^^ Fagor is good stuff - is it gas or electric??

Have you looked in that upmarket kitchen tile shop - Boothavon (Sp?)
The one in Pattaya has a clearance table near the front of the shop with top name cooking gear heavily discounted to prices cheaper than the Homepro (with a discount card) price.

I got the Fagor, too. Even after a year the name still makes me giggle sometimes.

The "Smeg" range of products have a similar effect on me. Until I see the price, obviously.

Have you thought about a combo microwave/normal oven in one unit. If you don't need to bake a turkey take a look at Toshiba line of combo ovens. Its an oven and microwave in one unit. I bought one 4-5 months ago and just love it and would not hesitate to buy another one. Mine is model ER B7TC(S).

Yes, buying cheap appliances usually guarantees quality.

I hope it wasn't Whirlpool. The controls at mine just refused to work after only three years.

I have a Siemens range. Cooker is gas, oven is gas/electric. I do a lot of cooking and it is really a great unit. A bit pricey though at 32,000 baht.
