    Soi Zero is no more

Well after almost annual rumours that it was to close it finally happened at the end of last week.
Soi Zero is now closed down.
Though I was an infrequent visitor in recent times I will always remember it for two very charming young ladies that used to be employed at one of the establishments.
No doubt the young ladies from the various bars wil find themsleves alternative employment at similar estableishments along Sukhumvit

I was just thinking a couple of weeks ago they put up a huge white fence around the area. I am now assuming it was to ensure tat the recent royal visitors did not see anything untoward

In the whole scheme of things no but as one who simply enjoys a cold beer it had its place - cheap and sometimes cheerful.
I am not a great fan of the a-gogos- beer expensive and I can go along time between visits to the farang pubs and their clientele. I prefer to use them for their food.
I dont miss the english beer in the same way as MTD

Soi Zero always had me wondering, "Now just who goes there?"

It was always too far away for me.

Even though the beer may be cheap, (how much was a barfine?) it had little attraction, ie location; overpass etc, no aircon, so why would punters choose to go there.

I think the 'off the beaten track' scenario played in there. A few 'respectable' TEFLers didn't what their school heads see them stagger out of Nana with a teeny or two so they would hide under the bridge.

Not saying you're a sexpat Troubled, just generalising.

I have been called far worse.

Really not off the beaten track.
It was closer to Ploenchit BTS than Nana is to Nana BTS for instance.
No aircon does not bother me at all as long as the beer is cold.
Morgan Bar for instance had aircon and almost never any customers. Good place for a cold beer a chat and watch a match on the TV.
Most often i would sit at a non-aircon place
Far less pressure than most bar areas. I know i am not "hansum man", you know I am not "hansum man".
Sometimes i just want a quiet drink
    Music often very good.
As I said in an earlier post not a regular and less so in the last year or so but it wasn't a bad place for a change.

It would not be somewhere I am going to mourn

I used to live near Ploenchit so it was on my route up Sukhumwit most nights. Always a pleasant enough place to have a few sundowners with no hassle and watch the world roll by and the trains thunder by.

Sadly beerbars will soon be a thing of the past at this rate. Who wants to sit in an artificial aircon atmosphere when there is such a good climate for open air drinking here?

Bangkok, Sukhumvit especially, used to have loads of great spots for chilling over a few beers and doing a spot of people watching but they are sadly vanishing fast. Only Sois 4 and 5 still offer top notch sport these days!

I used to love sitting having a few in Bills on the old Clinton Plaza watching the TEFLers, overdressed in their business suits desperately trying not to look like English teachers, stroll past talking on their mobiles looking like they were tying up a massive multi national merger instead of lining up a whore at Gullivers or Beergarden.

    I liked Soi Zero.

Spent a very nice Songkran there 2 years ago with free beer.

Having said that, it was a bit of a dump, wasn't it.

I was there about a month ago and the place certainly needed a good clean. I can't say I liked the place either.

It always seemed like a dump to me. Even when it was called Buckskin Joes Village.

Dumps and dives often have a far better vibe than some of the TEFLer/wannabe businessmen hang outs like the Londoner etc etc.

Places like that are so lame. Full of 30K a month teachers dressed in suits who vanish as soon as happy hour is over back to the flat and girl they can ill afford!

As much as i disliked Zero, Clinton, the Chuwit's Park bars and Asoke corner you are 100% right Prof.

The Londoner is one of the most unappealing bars I've seen.
Popualr with the TV crowd I beleive.

I've always thought that the customers made the bar you were in at any particular time. The Londoner crowd are tosspots so it becomes a tosspot bar whereas in Zero, you inevitably drink alone, so the customers are fantastic!

^ Londoner is OK if you want something different with your guests. But being a regular there doesn't sound right

Exactly. Nobody around to piss you off and spoil the drink.
Such place are becoming a thing of the past.
Certainly i wouldn't want to own one. i would think no customers is not exactly a desirable trait in a bar.

    Is everything gone yet?

I was always planning on going down there and getting a bar, fridge and some stools for a good price for when I open "Poolie's TeakDoor Tavern"!

    I think so.
I passed by the other day and while the structures were still standing they looked gutted.
Last week I watched the folks at Rooster Bar dismantle everyhting that could be dismantled, unscrew everything etc........

Who knows what you might find down the back though.
There is probably one bar that doesn't even know the area is closed down yet. Still thinking it is business as usual . "Well we have had our 3 customers for this month. Business will get better in July"

With that prime location, I wouldn't be surprised that they plan to open yet another shopping mall

the bf ranged 200-300B for a lot of bars. And the girls were happy with 1k LT. Try doing that in Rainbow! The girls wont take that for a ST. Madness.

It wasnt often but you sometimes found a gem and then didnt tell your mates where you got her in case they went for her

I wonder if they will move to Suk plaza. God knows that place needs more life in it.
You dont pay them to stay for the night, you pay them to leave in the morning
