Zubin Mehta will be conducting the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra at the Thailand cultural Centre at 7.30 pm on 30th July.

They are performing two works:

Tchaikovski's 6th Symphony

Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition.

I can't find details of tickets anywhere on the Web. This is advertised on a poster in Bangkok but even the Thailand Cultural Centre's website isn't functioning (http://www.thaiculturalcenter.com/home.html) so I got the details off Zubin Mehta's personal website.

Bangkok's 10th International Festival of Dance and Music is set for an early start this year, on July 30, with a concert by Zubin Mehta and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra (IPO).

The festival is dedicated to the memory of HRH the late Princess Galyani Vadhana and her contribution to the development of arts and culture in Thailand. The princess was also the patron of the festival and the driving force behind it.

The second part of the festival will run from September 15 to October 13.
The director of the festival, J.S. Uberoi, is grateful to the Ambassador of Israel to Thailand, Yael Rubinstein, for putting him in touch with the IPO. Once the orchestra, lead by Zubin Mehta, agreed to perform in Thailand, the next step was selecting the music. This, too, was done in respect for HRH the late Princess Galyani. On the evening of July 30, the orchestra will perform Pictures at an Exhibition by Mussorgsky (which Mussorgsky composed after the death of a dear friend) and Tchaikovsky's Pathe'tique, his final symphony.

I got my tickets for this yesterday. At some prices the tickets have mostly gone but there are still seats available around the ThB 4,000 mark.

Hate to sound culturally devoid but that where we'll spend our Tb4K for a good ticket

You probably won't get to see Mehta unless you are in the front row with all the high so, big bouffant matriarchs that swarm to these rare occasions

Hopefully the Thais will think so too. In the Thai Cultural Centre some of the best views are from the lowest priced areas. Good marketing really because the Thais will flock to pay ThB 10,000 for a view of the back of someone's head, just so they can show off their ThB 10,000 ticket.

Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra performed Stravinsky's Firebird last month at Mahidol Uni so it is probably worth keeping tabs on where they are performing.

I went last Tuesday. Excellent night out and a nice change from sitting in the pub. I'd recomend it any poster but I think tonight may be the last night

This concert was superb. The Mussorgsky was, IMHO, flawless. For anyone who really was interested in the Tchaikovski then the final movement of the sixth was especially emotive. Mehta really grasped it.

I held back from saying anything until reading what the Bangkok Post had to say and as I had no idea what the encore was. It was clearly a polka but not one I am familiar with.

According to the BP the concert ended with the Mussorgsky so their man must have left early, so I am still no wiser as to what the encore was.
