I try never to yell at the Boys, but I do sometimes.

If the photos are low res, you should be able to wack a few in a single post.

But if the photos are a couple of megapixels each then limit the number of pics per post.

I usually convert the images to low res.

I resized (think) 800x600, they come out fine in Word but then seem to have a mind of their own when transferred to TD.

Bits missed out from Day 1.

Back to the hotel from Paragon

both wrecked but he had a gun that needed testing and young people have those critical reserves, so having checked that it works now he wants the pool, which our room overlooks, so that's where we're going; I didn't think of it at the time, but for him a dip cancels anything that went before, so we're on a fresh footing if I can keep up…

    My cunning plan-20191224_160724-jpg

quick shower and change for some traffic dodging which he thought was fun but don't tell mum, made KSR safely

    My cunning plan-20191224_181118-jpg

where he flipped that people eat scorpions before getting lost, for a few minutes but long enough for me to break into a sweat knowing wifey was due to call for an update any minute, good timing, a laser and glasses made up for that.

    My cunning plan-20191224_181213-jpg

Next stop something to eat, found Zeze, an Israeli restaurant that was offering complementary meze (excellent), with good food as well at fair value,

followed by a free mint tea, sweet and piping hot the way I like it, then another walk along KSR till he seemed ready for the hotel

to round off a perfect day

    Day 2, Christmas:

Christmas day, just like yesterday, didn’t start as either of us hoped or expected, stiff and in pain from the day before, but one positive was that I had told him we’re (hopefully) coming with mum for a week in April with lots of fun things for him to do on the other side of Bkk, and we're here to check out this side first; he entered with spirit contributing toward the next trip with stuff that we’re definitely not going to do, which so far included everything from the previous day bar swimming and weapons acquisition.

Early a.m. and I was mentally planning to fill the day without too much physics, when wifey calls to say it can’t be that bad we’ve only been gone a day so up you get and head for Sampaeng, take in the market, everything there is cheap, that’s where she and her lot go when in bkk so it must be a hit, and maybe do Chinatown next door; he’ll like that. So we did, but first breakfast.

A decent spread as breakfasts go, usual cereals, toast and fruit,

no chafer pics, I couldn't get that close to what Thais eat, not first thing in the morning. Two toast, two eggs and jam followed by a heaped plate of fruit, my standard Thai hotel breakfast helped down with loads of milk.

This shouldn't be anywhere near food but I just found it, the corridor carpet re: my sanitation rant, zoom in for what should be enough to remove 2 of its 3 stars...

    My cunning plan-20191225_083301-jpg

Back to the room for a shower, or in his case a bath

    My cunning plan-20191225_083930-jpg

Then out, and that's where it started going horribly wrong.

60bt taxi to Sampaeng (vs the tuktuker's oath that 200 is cheap), dropped us off at some alleyway I would never venture after dark, but Christmas it is and the day is young so let’s enjoy another fcuking market!

Two minutes in and he wasn't having it, no pulled punches, why did I bring him from pty to march around bkk, the usual am I trying to kill him, wasn't yesterday enough (aside from the fun drive, nerf, pool and scorpions and dodging traffic and getting lost) I wanna go back to the hotel, hotel, hotel, thereafter shortening his rant to 'hotel' at random volume every few seconds. From arrival here and back to hotel he made damn sure that Sampaeng is on the list of stuff we’re not doing with mum, she can go alone.

But we were here, nothing much to see or do aside from shops and alleys and stalls, the few things I looked at were same or cheaper in Pty though that could be the farang effect, while all I heard from him was a high pitched whine throughout and with no let up. Worst part is I fully agreed with him, what were we doing here anyway, but I was in no mood for cranky so he could whine and bear it or just whine but he's tagging along until I say ok we're done.

From Sampaeng we moved into the world's largest Chinatown which always fascinates me, I don't know the sois from the squares but on my own could happily spend hours exploring the alleys and smells from pleasant through neutral to putrid, colours and textures, stuff that I'll never figure if you're meant to eat or kill or hang on the wall, constant activity, clipped elbows as mosais and trolleys brush by, dumplings and teas, fresh roasted chestnuts, even the temples, just not with a whining 8-yr old in tow.

They're all at it, morning to night, and nobody goes hungry...

Several other pics in this series didn't convert from heic, but leading to the hotel I gather this must be lottery central, about 200 metres thick with nothing but sellers and buyers, and it seems traders, as bundles of tickets move from one holder to another.

    My cunning plan-2019-12-29_13-51-36-png

He's had enough but no excuse, singed by the lava line but twigged in time with an instant retreat.

    My cunning plan-2019-12-29_13-49-15-png

Back to the room to lick wounds, and rest up for 20 before deleting the entire morning with a visit to the pool, then what...!

24 hours in and we're still mates, more or less.

The pool granted me another clean sheet, KSR for lunch and walkies, back to the hotel to work on our next move when wifey calls, it seems Central World have a spectacular tree, like that’s worth leaving the room for; but tbf the idea behind this was to travel BTS, new stuff for him, so lift off and let’s see if she got something right.

Nearest station is miles away so taxi to Victory Monument, not sure who they ganged up on but will check it out later, then a hike to the BTS; it was quite a feat keeping up with the nipper but either that or he gets lost and everyone has a hard time; for that event he carries both of our numbers + hotel details; then we bought his first ever waffles, one of the few things he will now eat without a performance, so that’s a huge positive, and scoffed them on the train wiping his fingers on my shirt beneath a sign warning against food and drink with fines of I don’t know 2000 baht and or twelve years which I noticed on the way off, but nobody seemed to care.

What did strike me as we got on the train, was two perfectly maintained teen girls that stood up as one to offer their seats with smiles and wais; I didn’t immediately realise it was for me and looked behind, then connected with their perspective, that of a dishevelled old bloke dripping through caked sweat hobbling behind a kid that looks about to see if he can touch both ends of the carriage in one breath; from my perspective, creaking hips, thighs of lead, couldn’t feel my legs and would’ve paid anything for a mouthful of water which he had just finished, I had more on my mind than age, that comes later, so I thanked them and tried not to make it obvious it was either that or an undignified drop to the floor as I crumpled into the seat, feeling grateful and must confess a bit narked, as this was the first time that someone gave me their seat; allowing for my current fragile state, it’s usually me that gets up for others not the other way round.

And embarrassed, but for a very different reason. Since that marathon walk in Bangkok proper yesterday, not Khoa San where everything goes, I became conscious of being sloppy and underdressed, sporting Pattaya shorts and shirt in the midst of people that clearly and almost without exception enjoy high self-esteem and take the effort to present themselves well. Tbh, I hadn’t considered that while wifey was packing, should have, and paid the price with severe discomfort, not to mention the few k baht to up my standards for the duration.

Tip: Pattaya can make you lazy, and careless on personal grooming, so unless this is your absolute horizon keep in mind that the world moves on.

And probably it was a very nice tree, except we didn’t get to see it because once my emergency shopping was done his mission switched to checking if they have a Nerf that’s missing from his armoury, which of course they did have, after which the rest became academic and we had to get back to the hotel right away because he remembered trapping some zombies in the bathroom and his new gun fires three at a time which is the best way to kill them. But we did agree that it’s his gun so he must carry it, just like yesterday…!

So nice to be young, inconsiderate, thick skinned and a bit daft.

After the hotel was Zeze and Burger King, then KSR, and either before or after that we went somewhere else, honestly can’t say where, it’s a blur.

Main thing is we returned for the night best of buddies.

Tomorrow is Boxing Day, and we won't be needing the pool to patch things up.

From our BTS experience it wouldn't bother me to go BTS at peak times, with such kind fellow travellers.

Must say I returned from the trip with very different perceptions; I never did like bkk and wouldn’t go there without good reason, though it’s easy to dislike something you don’t know, and I never got to know it beyond Nana. In brief, now I view it as a fantastic city, with smooth and cool modern day sophistication on the inside while 3W mayhem rages just metres outside; more on that later.

With all due respect, you took a kid to Bangkok to spend some quality time, completely ignored every kid friendly advice given and dragged him around markets all day before bribing him back with a pool and a new toy.

He's a kid! Do kid stuff!

I know what you mean about clothing, but I think it's bkk vs the provinces rather than just bkk vs patterz

We 'went in the other direction' on the sartorial front. After ten years plus in bkk I now have literally dozens of shirts and quite a few pairs of slacks that I never wear.

Smart casual has been exchanged for casual casual.

Agree, started off wrong and stayed that way for 2 days...then everything went just right on Day 3.
