Majestically enthroned amid the vulgar herd
Chinatown is massively overrated. You can't even walk along the pavements during the day. Dread to go there at night.
In the end, we only walked as far as we did so we could get to the river boat and escape. A shit hole of the highest calibre.
Went in january, my one and only visit.
Saw the most important sights
new MRT station
Nice slum behind, which may well be gone soon. It's an eyesore and literally a garbage dump, as this pic shows:
This was a consolation
...actually, China Town in San Francisco is massively overrated: as the Chinese made money, they moved to the suburbs and what a tourist will see now are tacky souvenir shops and stereotypical red-lantern draped restaurants...BKK China Town is still a thriving community with authentic shops selling goods to locals as well as tourists. Crowded? Yes, but if wide unpopulated boulevards are what you want, avoid bkk altogether...

^ Ditto London Chinatown. All the small shops of yesteryear are now tacky souvenir shops selling t-shirts of London and model red buses. Many are staffed by dodgy looking middle eastern types. They've got the Chinese tourists hooked and the place is teeming with them. Why make any more effort.
Apart from Loon Fung supermarket, there's absolutely zero reason to visit, unlike 15yrs ago I could get my fill of Asian DVDs from 4 different shops.
Food isn't as great too. I'm sure nowadays it's one big kitchen serving same crap to every restaurant in the street
^^^Which one of those balconies is yours tomcat?
They chuck all that trash and leave it to fester for a reason.
Rats!
Bbq rat
Rat soup
Rat racing and gambling
Could be worse as Chinatowns go....still find a few decent real authentic eateries tucked away in side sois.
Though, Yaowarat, in particular still holds on to that working side charm, even though somewhat giving in to that trashy tourism lent. Hard-to-find items [food/medicinal] can still be secured in their most unique everyday markets....
Like everything and every place - should've known it 30-40 [and beyond] years ago.
...^555...haul up one of those plastic bags: local catering for hors d'oeuvres...
Low-rent trashy Farang city slickers....
quite like Yaowarat and Sampaeng to be honest, decent eating nd fruit and some nice shrines and temples
always pick up a supply of pu erh tea
nice start Tom, get to the food pics please
