How to stay safe while in Thailand? Tips please

I’m travelling to Thailand in three weeks for a romance tour. I’ve heard friends giving me warnings to take care of myself while staying there. They said it’s a nice place but it’s still my first time visiting Asia so I should be careful. Now, I need tips on how to stay safe while in the country.

Are there particular things that I should be aware of? What are the common negative things that happen to tourists there that I might encounter? I need to know this ahead because I don’t want something bad to happen to me while in there.

I’ve already read some blogs and other posts about their experience. It was a mix of good and bad reviews. I need other details though that I have to keep in mind. Is there any guide someone can recommend to me? I need more information. I only have three weeks left to prepare.

Don't shag ladyboys, don't wear gold chains, wear a condom. Keep excess cash in your room safe.

"I only have three weeks left to prepare".

Friend, you can spend three months preparing if you so wish, but, as they say, "house always wins"

Good luck, and enjoy your visit. Post your adventures on here. Picture threads are very welcome.

    Welcome to the Teakdoor too!

    OP:

Watch your back and your money. Keep your wallet inside your clothes or around your body.
Be very vigilant while crossing the road. Double check both sides twenty times before embarking.
Learn Muay Thai, in case you need to use it.
Don't get angry with the Thais... smile, smile.

The numbers the girls wear in a go-go bars are not so you can pick the girl of your dreams like a floating duck at the midway/funfair. The numbers are there so you can remember and report to the police . "She was number X from a bar called Y.

Get drinks from the waitress never allow your "companion" go and get you a drink.
If she looks too good , she probably isn't. Check how often "she" blinks.
Never pick up someone on the street after the bars have closed.
Never take anyone or offer to take anyone you picked up after hours back to your hotel room. ( These three/four go together)

Never run a bar tab, pay as you go.
Smile and buy the Mamasan a drink.
They chose you. You don't chose them.
(Financial not safety) In BKK always flag down a taxi. Don't get in a stationary lurking one. (See internet for how to hail an Asian cab)

The taxi driver knows more about smart phone navigation than you, but still cannot read a map.

Again financial rather than physical safety.
If you have already organized the "romance" ahead of time.

    Her brother/uncle is her husband
The family sold their last buffalo in about 1985
No one in the family is actually sick
Her father/uncle/brother never take care of their motorbike. Why should you?
    Etc..

    Real physical safety?
Never join a group of Thais drinking whisky no matter how friendly or how good their English is.
    Avoid stepping on guys feet
    Never argue with Thais
Anyone picking a fight with you is not alone
    Etc.

Better to think inside the pub, than outside the box?
I apologize if any offence was caused. unless it was intended.
You people, you think I know feck nothing; I tell you: I know feck all

Summary; stay in your room and make sure the door is locked.

I've done it plenty of times. Can't see the problem.

    Don't fall inlove too quickly.

    Use a condom.

    Stay away from motorcycles, balconies.

Only spend what you can afford to lose.

Don't particularly agree with that one. Those room safes are quite vulnerable. If you must have extra cash, a good solid suitcase with a good lock is better in my opinion.

VocalNeal pretty much nailed it. This one in particular:

"Never join a group of Thais drinking whisky no matter how friendly or how good their English is" cannot be emphasized enough.

The main one would be not to hire a motorbike. Your insurance will almost certainly not cover it, and most foreigners come acropper there.

If I had to sum up in one piece of advice, it would be "Don't be a dick". Foreigners generally have to work pretty hard to get in trouble in Thailand.

If an Indian says you have a lucky face - Walk away.

If some Asian dude asks you where you're from, and he has a sister going to Uni or is a nurse in the same area as you - Walk away.

If a dark dude makes eye contact or starts making clicking noises in your direction - Walk away.

If it doesn't have a price displayed - Walk away.

If the meter is not turned on in a taxi - Stop and then walk away.

If some dude with an Italian sounding name tries selling you Bitcoins - Walk away.

If you don't need a suit that has Steven Segal as their best customer. Walk away.

If someone tells you something is closed (Grand Palace for example) - Walk away and check for yourself.

If you hear a Micheal Jackson song in a bar - Moonwalk away

If you end up in a bar with people from Liverpool - Walk on, waaaaaalllllk on with hope in your heart.
    Black diamonds? I shit 'em.

Make sure the taxi driver turns the meter on. I had one from Swampy turn it off as soon as we started moving. I had to threaten him that I'd jump out if he didn't switch it back on.
