Reminiscing ... I liked the old Lumpini Night Market

I liked the old Lumpini Night Market ... the Suan Lum Night Bazaar.

The bands, the beer towers, the mix of people, the cheap food ... did I mention the Beer?

Yes, yes, I know, it's moved to Suk Soi 9009

Has anything come close to replacing it?

Apparently the new night market is crap. Anyone been? Review?

I've enjoyed a beer in the courtyard, W District at Phrakanong BTS.

    Completely different ... but enjoyable.

Never been to the OnNut Beer Garden ... I've read about it ... any good?

    What/where else is good?

    Thanks in advance
Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago ...

I liked the old Thermae. Back in the '70's. At 4AM it was like the bar scene in Star Wars.

Even post-2000, it still had shades of the old times...I could feel it...Had a few whiskies there and some old bartenders serving it up...And one smiling happy lady sitting across the "longest bar in Bangkok"...Had the same smile on 40, maybe 50 years ago...

I used to like sitting at Suan Lum, eating, drinking whilst sat far from the noise onstage. The former BEC Tero Hall nearby was where I saw Bryan Ferry & Pretenders on a double bill. Had a few beers with Bkk Phil that evening too. Great gigs

I think they opened a lesser, smaller version on Ratchada somewhere (near Esplanade?)

Beer garden betwen suk 13/15 was the place where the first AF get together took place.

Is a greasy egg and chips at Offshore worth reminiscing about? It did hit the spot.

All in the '70's....Bobby's Hot Dogs. On an alley between Pat Pong 1 and 2. Order through a little window. 2AM gut bombs.

The Flying Machine on PP2. Rick Menard's Grand Prix on PP1. Napoleons. And, of course, the Madrid.

^ Madrid is still there. Breakfast still good.

W district OK but a bit upmarket with a small "u". There are some freelancers.

Not sure where the actual market ie. shopping went. OK there is the one on Srinakarin soi 50-something but I haven't seen any largish beer parking lot.

The one by Udom Suk BTS is a non entity.
Better to think inside the pub, than outside the box?

That is where I met Terry 57, English Noodles, Baldrick, The Fresh Prince and The Gentleman Scamp and I think Driventowank turned up later in the evening for a bit of comic relief.

    TWAS A GREAT FUNNY EVENING.

Used to live just round the corner from it.

Spent many a nights exchanging cash for coupons and enjoying the cheap beer and kebab man sweating his nuts off in his little kiosk.

Big screens with the footie and the usual Thai bands/sexy dancing girls doing their stuff.

If too loud, you could retreat to the smaller restaurants within the market.

Think Asiatique, but half the price, triple the fun and quadruple less chinese tour people.

I have to admit, I have not really enjoyed Bankok since the mid 80s.

I was there last Saturday night had booked some doctors appointments for some scheduled maintenance on my svelte self. Stayed in soi 11 at a reasonable gaff and ended up getting an early start on the beverages ( around lunchtime) wound up in soi 22 much later and had quite a fun evening, didn't even go to the go go bars this time, must be getting old? Or the noveltys worn off. Was quite surprised to see that soi 22 still had a bit going on.Bangkoks still an awesome city as far as I'm concerned, couldn't live there though.

Anyone been to LAVA and Zantika? Loads of my friends in BKK still go there. I've mellowed down a little, and have gotten boring.

Zantika burnt down at the end of 2008, killing many who couldn't get out of the non-existent fire doors

I left BKK around Sept 2008. People who know my blog can say I'm saying the truth.

Oh, yeah, I think I remember the fire now.... my friends were suppose to be going there, but went to Superfly instead. I remember them telling me about it on New Year's Day in 2009.

The mind sometimes forget things like that specially if you've lead another life in the last 8 yrs.
I am so unlucky that if I fall into a barrel full of D*ick**s, I'd come out sucking my own thumb!
