It's great to see somebody helping at the "pit face". Actually doing the work instead of just chucking money in a box. Well done !

There is a sad side to orphanages which most people are not familiar with. Rich westerners play politics with them. On the face of it they are philanthropists but many use their money purely to gain self esteem and standing in the community. They don't care about the welfare of the kids. These people actually act to deter good people from helping in a practical manner. The running of orphanages becomes politicised and the so-called benefactors believe that things must only be done in accordance with their wishes.

I know of two administrative heads of an orphanage in Thailand who, although great at their jobs, felt that they could no longer continue in their posts due to the constant interference of the people who provided the money. Their departures were, of course, to the detriment of the kid's welfare as "yes men" was appointed in their stead.

Again, well done for your act of kindness. It's a pity that some wealthy people do not act as you have done i.e. for the benefit of the kids rather than for their own reputation.
Why can't I make new posts?

My Thai wife and I regularly visit the Blind School off Naklua Road near the giant AD condo with food, clothes and toiletries to donate. It is heartbreaking to see these unfortunate kids who have never had sight and are abandoned. I often go there when the wife feels an urge to go to the Temple and I persuade to do this instead. We also take our two young children with us. It puts things in perspective.

On another note AO, the sign in one of your photos would have to be the only Thai/English sign in Thailand with no spelling mistakes......................I think.

    Very lovely gesture, AO.

Giving in practical ways to the community is far more interesting and productive than bowing and scraping in a temple/church or wherever and asking for things to be given from on high. I often wonder about how much it costs to put red fanta on all those spirit houses per year and how many books for school libraries could have been bought, how many more teachers paid, how many classrooms air conditioned, how many poor people fed, etc.

It's always good to keep an eye out for things to do close to home as well. I sometimes give money to a poor family who work in my apartment block. They have two kids and need all the help they can get. It helps build a feeling of community.

Well done to AO and family.
