Reporting back after going through the process of applying for Aussie citizenship for my daughter.

Cheers to the good folk of TD for the solid advice - I didn't even need to go to that 'other site' for any info. Noteably Willy and InT were spot on.

    It goes like this:

Fill out form 118 and get some random TEFLer to sign the applicant's photo's to certify ID (all other certification is done at the embassy).

Go to wireless road with birth certificate and ID from both parents (minimum).

*Tip: 'Wireless' road was a point of contention when getting the taxi and the mrs trying to get the right road in pasa Thai. 'Wireless' must be an old falang term for radio, as the Thai name is 'radio road' directly translated.

A hustler-type should spot you and offer service and you'll be taken to a translator. We had a few docs I thought to get translated for overkill but the woman said not necessary, all Aussie citizenships the only translation required is birth certificate, stamped by the translator. Our lady boasted to having done hundreds of them.

They offered same day service (Friday) but we jetted off to the beach and came to pick up on Monday.

Either get your other docs (passport and DL from both parents in our case) photocopied at the translator or somewhere on wireless road (just beside 4 season's) ready and in order for the embassy to certify.

Take all your shit to the Aussie embassy (50 bt taxi), make sure you got originals of any copies, and get there between 10.30am - 12.00pm. I called them and they said 10.30am - 1.30pm, we get there 11.50am and see a big arse sign saying 'citizenship applications accepted ONLY between 10.30am and 12.00am. Fair play to the mrs. she sniggered that she thought Australia and everything about it was perfect

Funny story about a thick Aussie pushing two prams cracking the absolute shits outside the embassy to the Thai security who denied him entry as he was late to apply for citizenship, this was when we were leaving about 12.15pm. Will post about it later.

The embassy check the form, the original docs, certify the copies, and you cough up 3900 bt. Which sucks. Every other Aussie is getting $5K baby bonus and I gotta cough up to apply for citizenship by descent.

I had extra docs but the lady said not necessary but did take two photo albums dated and signed with various family pics in chronological order.

Still waiting on the result (within 10 days of applying you get an answer) but it should be a lock - if your shit is not in order they will not accept the application in the first place.

Do everything it says on form 118, wireless road is your friend, piece of piss

When learning to read Thai, and thus reading every street sign etc. I was always amused at how it looked like only 3 letters. วิทยุ

Anyway, glad it was so easy. Good that they don't have a box for 'Tick if you believe the human race was started by ancient aliens who came here on their spaceships'.

I was one of the smart arse freaks that tried to get 'Jedi' registered as a religion way back in the Aus cencus, where if enough people (2000 I think) Identify with it they must class it as a legitimate religion

Probably. But I was enough of an idiot to write 'jedi' in the religion box.

Only a native speaker would have alarge enough vocabulary to know that, so don't be too embarrassed.
