With pilot no 1 and pilot no 2 both being aviation enthusiasts they headed off and checked out the museum while I chilled out with a good book and a coffee before wondering around outside for a few pics.

News is what someone, somewhere is trying to suppress - everything else is just advertising.

They did tours of the two jets but only every 3 hours and as much as I wanted to do one we didn't have that much time to spare.

Besides I had to get ready for my section of flying. Yep, time for me to done the biggles cap and take control for an hour or two enroute to Winton.

    Here I go.....

This is only the second time I had taken control of a chopper and it was much easier then the first time (but still bloody hard)

Thank fully we had a straight stretch of highway leading us into Winton. I found it easier to follow this the follow a line on the GPS.

After about an hour things got a little boring so we picked out a truck on the road and went in for a closer look.

We later found out that the bloke we were staying at in Mt Isa that night actually owned that truck.

Water is scarce out here and cattle will walk a long way to get to small dams for a drink. There are literally thousands of their tracks all over the place.

After refueeling at Winton we headed out on our final leg of the day to Mt Isa.

The landscape changed dramatically about 80 kms from Mt Isa.

For the first time since going over the blue mountains we actually had to look out for 'traffic' as at sunset the Mt Isa airport is humming with mine flights and mustering choppers all arriving home for the day.

Great stuff mate...a couple of questions if I may...
    what's this truck hauling?..
why is the first trailer so far away and the second trailer connection so close?..

bloody dry country isn't it...makes you wonder why a man would try to farm in an area like that...

Would be pretty difficult to know what he's carting unless MM asked. Those shaped trailers are used to cart anything from flour to liquid waste.

As for its set-up, yep its pretty unusual. It's called a "B-Double" with a third trailer but very rarely do you see the third trailer first.

Just just went down to the Highway on the edge of town and snapped this

The "dolly" joins the trailers together, the longer the "A-Frame" the easier it is to reverse is the main reason.

I know someone who used to drive road trains, at 3 o'clock in the morning - pitch dark he could put a touch under the front drivers side corner of the 3rd trailer (facing up) and reverse the truck with the 1st 2 already attached straight up to it. You need to get it within about 5cm or it will miss the "ring feeder" joiner pin.

Before "B-Doubles" were introduced it was simply 3 trailers connected by "dolly's". This however meant that they had to dump the third trailer to drive through city's and town's due to their length. Then they introduced the new trailer which is shorter and incorporates they dolly. This means no more unhitching and time saved which makes up for the loss of freight (hope that makes sense).

Btw, lovin the pic's MM - keep 'em coming!

It certainly can be dry (between the floods!) It certainly take a unique breen of person to farm out there which is what makes the place so interesting.

Coming into the Isa I asked the pilot who we were staying with as he had mentioned that we were crashing with some bloke who he had met in sydney who was also studying for his chopper license.

He said "some bloke called Tony, I think he is a truck driver, dunno what it will be like, probably just a swag on the concrete." I figured it couldn't be any worse then the night before in Cunnumulla.

Turns out that Tony isn't just a truck driver, he owns the truck, about 100 of them!
He has bought a chopper for fun and has almost finished his license. A great night was had with a BBQ at his place and a few Teddys.

I showed him the pic of the truck shown above and he said it was one of his which is why I know what it was carting!

Now without hijacking ya thread MM - I remembered there being a world record attempt at pulling the most amount of trailers by a road train, with a quick search on the net it turns out it was actually here and Kalgoorlie and I see these trucks driving around everyday.

World Records held by Gould Transport. Worlds Longest Road Train, Guiness Worlds Record Holders for the Worlds Longest Road Train and Longest Truck. World Records held by Gould Transport located in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia.

79 trailers - now thats something!

Also notice the tri axle prime mover they are using - these things are monsters and pretty much built especially for Aus.

At first light (again) after not much sleep (again) we were off, with the wind in our sails (literally) and homeward bound.

Any idea why they would put a bend in the road here?

A few more truck photos (I promise this is the last of them!)

Klongy, this is a traditional 'triple trailer' that Cimboc was talking about.

There was even a tourist towing a caravan.

They probably started building the road from both ends and were meant to meet in the middle -Ooops!

Classic - you know us aussies to well!

Although more like a section needed resurfacing and it was just easier to do it along side the old section. The other part will probably be moved over inline again when it needs replacing (and with all those trucks day and night wont be to far down the track)

    Anyway just my 2 cents
