    Indigenous wildflowers of Western Australia

"Anyone who holds on to the ability to see beauty never grows old" - Franz Kafka

("Jeder, der sch die Fähigkeit erhält, Schönes zu erkennen, wird nie alt werden")

I'm not a botanist nor particularly interested in the science behind flowers or plants, I just enjoy them - looking at them, smelling them and, with Australian or S/African wildflowers with their felt/pelt-like covering, feeling them. Flowers, trees etc ... which is why I've had hiking as one of my favourite hobbies for decades.

On a recent trip to Western Australia it seems we arrived just at the right time to see the floral splendour and idiosyncrasies on display - no idea of the name of most.

    Perth and WA

I'm not sure how many photos I can post, but splitting them up into several posts is better to appreciate them.

Kings Park PH? Spent a wet week in Perth several Augusts ago but did manage to get half a dry day in the park. Wonderful Perth, river and some Fremantle views and of the course the amazing range and quantity of Australian native plants. And quite a few (feathered) birds as well.

Different font. Googled, copy and pasted.

Had a few years in Oz, best country in the world to live in, imo. Never made it out west unfortunately. If I was stinking rich with no ties/responsibilities, and was allowed back into the country, first thing I'd do is a year long road trip of the entire country in something a bit bigger than Tezza's rig.

    Kings Park PH?
It is yeh. In the first photo, you are actually looking over the roof of my old mates apartment building, where I used to stay when over there. Right overlooking the old Swan Brewery site, now demolished. Could think of worse- yeh, the b'stard was loaded. Bought it off a Bond, serious.

It certainly is special - and yes, let's not forget Fremantle - a great food market to boot

    The food? WA seafood? *slurp*

    It is, absolutely.

We were actually in Perth to buy a house as it's very close to MY/SG - the first trip was to scope out the place and we liked it. I was in Singapore/Malaysia and Mrs PH was in NZ. She has just one major need - max 30 degrees. Perth. Right. We were in luck, 18-21 degrees the whole week.

We went back a few weeks later as we'd found a perfect house in the northern beaches suburb of Sorrento - simply perfect. The deal was almost done . . . temps were 17, 17, 19, 22, 38, 38.

Needless to say she flew back to NZ and I flew back to SG/MY.

    Anyway:

And they're so very different from fairly well anywhere else - even other parts of Australia. What many cannot imagine is the size of the country and what lies between the settled areas:

    >">

    • Total 7,692,024 km2 (2,969,907 sq mi) (6th)
    • Water (%) 1.79 (as of 2015)
    Population
    • 2021 estimate 25,789,100 (53rd)

    Over 4000km east to west
    Over 3600km north to south

The sheer size and inhospitable terrain explains why vegetation is so different in the various regions

Hope you don't mind PH but I'll add a few of my favourite photos from Kings Park, Perth in August 2016.

^No idea PH. Just iPhone 7 pics. But those were the better shots from maybe fifty or so I took so the duds are not on display. Took a few shots back towards the CBD and the river but all a bit dull...it was a wet week and I spent most of it sitting in a hotel room waiting for the USA consulate to process a visa.

Springtime is great for Wildflowers growing all along the roadsides and paddocks
out in the country north and east of Perth.

Will have a look PH. reddog's comment stirred memories as a pre-teen kid (1960s) in the Riverina of purple/mauve Pattersons Curse flowers thick on both sides of the road and stretching to the horizon. I also remember the yellow daisies in the local paddocks that we would make into daisy chains. Used to hunt rabbits and pick mushrooms in those same paddocks. Caught a very pissed off six foot goanna by the leg in a rabbit trap one time. Can't remember what we did about it, likely got my father to deal with it.

Have plenty of photos of WA wildflowers out in the country but have not converted them to digital format from slides.
Well worth a drive if you are there at the right time, miles and miles of every colour under the Sun.
This thread might make me get off my arse and convert them.
Bogan, those Paddocks covered in Paterson's curse making you slow down and enjoy the view.

Found a few more, and the obligatory meal to round it off . . . WA is an amazing place and the next trip there will be to Broome, about 2000km north of Perth, and further.

Eerie landscape with the odd bush

Thousands of kms very little change . . .

And at the end of the journey a few well-earned delights
