Excellent. Really nice thread PH, in a really nice place. I done a hire care from Christchurch to Queenstown, a circuitous way. And a helitour over the big glacier & fjords. My last snow fight was in NZ.
But there is soo much more to see, that I haven't- Greymouth & those nutter fishermen fascinates me, the wine growing areas, Scottish Dunedin (obviously still a colony). I'd love to van there.
Christchurch & Adelaide are sister cities btw, and they do have some things in common.

NZ is a place I've never visited either, despite having quite a few Kiwi pals, and old friends that emigrated there also. Hoping normal travel resumes asap.

Done that as well, stopping off in Wanaka . . . but that was over fifteen years ago.

Double-thumbs up for that . . . definitely on my wish-list. Mrs Hat did it when she was in high school . . . How brilliant was it?

Dunedin and Invercargil - they even speak like they do in Scotland - also a must one day

    This I didn't know

Yes, a cheap holiday or country as such . . . it isn't. We spent a week-end at Mount Manganui, near Tauranga, at a 'resort. Over $300 a night and we just felt cheated after living in Asia for so long

You'd be guessing correctly. Oddly enough they were going to close as fish weren't biting.

From Blenheim/Marlborough we drove onto Nelson, famed in NZ as the town that gets the most sunny days per annum . . . but is also a ver, very nice town nestled between the beautiful hinterland and the equally beautiful sea.

    (Not my pic, obviously)

The town has quite a few 'old' buildings and is geographically the centre of New Zealand - a photo-must (yes, my photo):

You walk up a hill close to the centre of town and 30 minutes later enjoy a breathtaking view of the place . . . which I forgot to do so I will use a sourced pic:

Now, the main reasons for going to Nelson aside from always wanting to see the place (and we will be back) is it's the gateway to another astoundingly beautiful part of NZ, the Abel Tasman National Park. We scheduled several days there to do as much hiking as possible. There are many ways to do this, catch a ferry to one of many spots and get out and hike or drive up to the border of the park and just go . . .

Most ferries leave from Kaitetriteri so it's a good idea to stock up on food in Motueka, about an hour's drive from Nelson.

    After this it only tracks

You have to be aware of the tides if you are trakking along the waterline, though

    Low tide

You also need to watch your footing as once you leave the paths you're kind of stuck with what you have . . . and we like going off-track

MOre later, it's a long week-end - Labor day and the weather is kinda nice so off to meet friends for a picnic

^^Nelson looks beautiful! Enjoy your long weekend! My friend has been asking me to visit for the last few years. I hope to visit at some point in the future. I also didn't get to spend enough time in Australia ( a week), so I may try to do both if possible.

Mrs Hat did it when she was in high school . . . How brilliant was it?
Absolutely brill- I would say that and a helitour over the Hawaiian volcanoes & glacial valleys should be on everyone's bucket list. Not cheap but... the quality is remembered long after the price is forgotten.
