East Australian homes invaded by strange new visitors amid deluge - lawn prawns

“Lawn prawns” have taken over several homes in Australia’s east coast after heavy rains in the area forced the creatures to look for dry areas to seek shelter.

Small and dull brown in colour, the creatures are prawns that are found on land.

Australian man killed by kangaroo he kept as pet
    Sep 13 2022
An Australian man has died after being attacked by a kangaroo he had been keeping as a pet, police say.

A relative found the 77-year-old man with serious injuries on Monday at his home in Redmond, about 400km (250 miles) south of Perth.
When paramedics arrived at the rural property, the kangaroo prevented them from treating the man. Police were forced to shoot the marsupial dead.
The man died at the scene.
A police spokesperson told media they believed the man had been attacked by the kangaroo - a wild animal - earlier in the day.
Australia is home to about 50 million kangaroos but attacks are rare. This is the first fatal one reported in Australia since 1936.

Australian man with distinctive 'beast' facial tattoo wanted by police
    12:55, Sep 29 2022

On Wednesday, police on the border of the states of New South Wales and Victoria put out an appeal for assistance to locate Jaimes Sutton.

He was due to appear in court earlier this month, after being bailed on assault and property damage charges, news.com.au reported.

Hundreds of social media users commented on Sutton’s mugshot, with many quipping that Sutton would be hard to spot in a crowd, while others joked that he was a like a toddler who had got hold of some colouring pens.

Giant cane toad nicknamed 'Toadzilla' discovered in Queensland
    Jan 20 2023

“A cane toad that size will eat anything it can fit into its mouth, and that includes insects, reptiles and small mammals.”
    Officers euthanised the toad.
Gray said that, because of its size, Toadzilla was probably a female. She weighed 2.7 kilograms, which Gray said could be a record.
Indigenous to South and Central America, cane toads were introduced to Queensland in 1935 in an ill-fated attempt to control the native cane beetle, which was wreaking havoc on the state’s sugar crops. They are now believed to number about 200 million across Australia.

What is happening in Alice Springs? The town in the middle of a crime wave

    By Nick Pearson

New limits on buying alcohol in Alice Springs following PM's visit

For the locals in Alice Springs, crime has been a rising problem for months and months.

But the crisis has only just come into nationwide awareness in the past week.

The crime wave is so bad Prime Minister Anthony Albanese had to make a sudden visit to the town.

So why is this incredibly isolated town of about 26,000 in the news?

What is happening in Alice Springs?

Put simply, crime is out of control in the red centre, with residents reporting a surge of break-ins, vandalism and alcohol-related assaults.

The latest data released by NT Police showed a sharp spike in crime in the year ending in November.

But locals say the situation has gotten worse since then.

Why has crime increased so dramatically?

There's many reasons for the causes of crime in any community, but increased access to alcohol is seen as a major factor in the Alice Springs crime wave.

The Stronger Futures legislation introduced in 2012 restricted the purchase of alcohol and banned it on large swathes of Aboriginal land.

The legislation was in place for 10 years, and expired last year and has not been renewed.

What is the territory government doing to address the problem?

The territory government has introduced strict new bans on buying alcohol.

Takeaway purchases of alcohol will be prohibited on Mondays and Tuesdays, and will only be permitted between 3pm and 7pm on the remaining days. Each person will have a one transaction limit per day.

The measures came into effect yesterday, and will be in place for three months.

The territory will also ramp up anti-crime measures with a boost in federal funding.

What is the federal government doing?

Canberra will put $14.2 million into high visibility police operations, specifically targeting grog running. Liquor licensing compliance inspections will also be increased.

The government will also put more funding into emergency accommodations for young people.

More funding will also be put into domestic violence services, First Nations justice measures, health infrastructure and Indigenous housing.

No. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has already ruled out the use of the AFP to restore order.

"The idea that they have more improved skills than someone who's here on the ground in Alice Springs and the local Northern Territory Police, I'm yet to see anyone put that argument," he said yesterday.

    Outback Australia - Halls Creek

An outback business owner, who was pelted by rocks and threatened during two carjacking attempts, says it is an alarming escalation in his community's ongoing struggle against youth crime.

Power contractor Tony Lister has called on Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Opposition Leader Peter Dutton to also visit Halls Creek, in the Kimberley, but "without the fanfare".

Mr Lister said he had just assessed a power pole fault in the town at 3am on January 12 when about a dozen teenagers surrounded his car.

He said he wound down the window to talk to one of the youths who then tried to reach through the window and steal his keys.

Mr Lister said the youth started yelling "let's jack this n*****", sending the rest of the group into a frenzy.

He said the teenagers tried to open the passenger door, while also climbing on his vehicle.
"Another who came in the passenger door said give us the keys you c***," Mr Lister said.

He managed to drive away but the same group confronted him at his business depot hours later. (watch the video in the link below)

Mr Lister said they threatened to kill him if he did not give them the car keys and rocks were thrown at him as he fled into his "smoko" room.

Of course, if it was reported as an attack by an 'Aboriginial' gang/mob ... that would be racist.

If law enforcement is part of the problem, the good PM is obviously talking out of his ass.

It's a total mess. Similar story throughout the Kimberley, not just Halls Creek- Derby, Broome, Marble Bar. I was thinking of trundling my trusty campervan up there for an extended trip, but not these days.

^You forgot Kununnura, but those sort of places were dangerous disaster areas way back when I was working around them and they've only gone backwards since by the looks of it. First time I ever saw racial segregation was in the Halls Creek pub where the blacks had their own bar which was bare concrete floored with the tables and chairs bolted to it, and they were served in plastic cups through a hole in the chicken wire separating the staff from the customers! Then the surrounding area turned into a war zone at closing time. Couldn't imagine going there as a tourist.
