Bathurst 1000 2019: Jamie Whincup explains shock Practice 5 crash
Jamie Whincup is confident the Red Bull Holden Racing Team can get his car out for qualifying despite a Practice 5 crash.
Late in the session, as Whincup crested Skyline, Richie Stanaway had just sent his #33 Boost Mobile ZB Commodore into the tyre barriers. Whincup avoided Stanaway’s stricken car, but slid offline and crashed in the entry to the Dipper.
The session was red-flagged as both cars were collected, with Scott McLaughlin lowering his own practice/qualifying lap record in the 60-minute hitout.
Explaining the incident, Whincup said he tried to take off as much speed as he could.
However, being out in the marbles at such pace left him exposed to the eventual accident.
“I saw Richie go in as I came over Skyline,” Whincup said on the broadcast.
“If you look at it on TV it all looks pretty flat there, but it’s massively downhill.
“I just tried to scrub off as much speed as I possibly could while going around him … going around means you’re in the marbles as well.
“It hit the wall. Not massive, I’ve had a lot worse … smashed the front-left corner.”
The four-time Bathurst winner was the fastest in Practice 1 on Thursday morning, and gave his team as much feedback as he could on the damage before it was returned to the garages.
“Rear has got the camber knocked off it, but hopefully it’s not transaxle or anything like that,” said Whincup when describing the damage to the car.
“I’m pretty confident we’ll be out for qualifying. I tried to give the boys as much info as I could so we can start preparing.
“It’s broken a front-upright, front wishbones, trailing arm. There’s no fluid anywhere so radiator looks intact.
“The front splitter is smashed across and it just looks like a rear trailing arm at the back as well.”
The 40-minute qualifying gets underway at 4:00pm AEDT.

Australia: British backpackers complain they can't find work
A pair of professional body piercers who are covered in tattoos and have split tongues have complained they can't find work in Australia.
The British backpacking couple took to social media to ask for help finding jobs, but many on Facebook weren't so sympathetic.
The pair also do body suspension together – an extreme form of body modification where a person is strung up with large hooks through their flesh.
