Turns out that deer was indeed on is own land.

It was the couples pet deer which they kept on their own acreage.

They were going to feed it when it jumped out and gored the man.

Just as well they put it down. I doubt the wifey could have suffered it being in the garden after offing her old fella.

And it was a cross between a red deer and an elk so the antlers in the ABC pic I posted are more accurate than the ones on the BBC.

Three-eyed snake found on Northern Territory highway

While the rest of the world (well, at least all those feverishly consuming every dark nuance of the final season of Game of Thrones) is talking about a fictional Three-Eyed Raven, a genuine three-eyed snake has been found on a highway in the Northern Territory.

From the 'Only in Australia' File #001-11073908-3x2-940x627-jpg
    Key points:

Rangers found the snake on a highway about 35km from Darwin
Photos posted on social media have attracted thousands of likes and comments
An x-ray showed the snake had one skull with an extra eye socket and three functioning eyes

GIF: The other three-eyed creature everyone is talking about.

The Northern Territory Parks and Wildlife service revealed this week rangers discovered the tri-eyed critter on the Arnhem Highway near the town of Humpty Doo, about 35 kilometres from Darwin.

The juvenile snake, which was about 40 centimetres long, has become Facebook famous, with photographs of it uploaded to the service's page on Wednesday attracting thousands of likes and comments.

From the 'Only in Australia' File #001-11074088-3x2-940x627-jpg

A lot of commenters have taken a humorous view of the snake's discovery and seen it as a chance to demonstrate their skills with puns.

One poster, Joel Carter, said: "I tried to come up with a few jokes but they just got cornea and cornea."

Another, Tony Pantaleo, commented: "But the question is can he see out of the eye … or is the Third Eye Blind?"

^^ isn't that racist? Treating people differently because of their religion?
Shouldn't working with muslims be the same as working with anyone else?

No, the guidelines are because of racism and ignorance and are trying to alleviate the problem. Is it racist to give ignorant white people guidlines on how to treat the special problems Aboriginal patients have?

I had a friend in Fiji who went spearfishing and was taken by a shark, probably a tiger. They retreived his hips and legs in one part, and his shoulders and head in another part. His abdomen was taken in one bite.
The above croc was probably taken by a great white, no problem for a big one to do that.

It appears that not only have the Chinese navy breached the Oz 12 mile limit, they've sailed into the Garden Island naval base without being blown out of the water.

Chinese Warships Cause Stir During Stopover in Sydney

From the 'Only in Australia' File #001-1075590773-png

"When a trio of Chinese warships sailed into Sydney Harbor Monday, it caused a bit of a stir, with many news outlets reporting it was a “surprise” visit while Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison was overseas. However, Morrison reassured the public the port call was planned long in advance.

Three ships from the Chinese People's Liberation Army-Navy arrived in Sydney on Monday for a four-day stopover at Garden Island naval base, an Australian naval depot: the Type 054A frigate Xuchang, the Type 907 replenishment ship Luoma Hu and Type 071 amphibious transport dock Kunlun Shan.

The ships and their roughly 730 sailors are returning to China from a counter drug trafficking mission in the Gulf of Aden off the coast of Somalia, and they stopped over as part of a goodwill mission.

Nice pics of the #Chinese #Navy's 31st Escort Force visit to Sydney, Australia. The unannounced arrival Monday morning 3 June surprised many folks. #Frigate XUCHANG 536, #amphibious ship KUNLUNSHAN 998 and supply ship LUOMAHU 964. https://t.co/J32X6Vi6VB pic.twitter.com/EKyieTaUdp

    — Chris Cavas (@CavasShips) June 3, 2019

Nothing about the stopover is new: Chinese ships last visited Australia in 2017, and Australian ships visited China as recently as April 2019, when they took part in Beijing's celebration of the 70th anniversary of the founding of the PLAN. However, that didn't stop media figures and civilians alike from turning the visit into an ominous spectacle and symbol of growing Chinese power.

Rory Medcalf, head of the National Security College at Australian National University, took to Twitter to voice his immense displeasure with the visit.

This is actually quite something. Chinese naval visits to Australia have more typically been a lone frigate, not a task group with an amphibious assault ship and 700 personnel. Sydney is hardly a convenient stopover on their way home from the Gulf of Aden. What's the story here?

    — Rory Medcalf (@Rory_Medcalf) June 3, 2019

"Chinese naval visits to Australia have more typically been a lone frigate, not a task group with an amphibious assault ship and 700 personnel," the scholar tweeted on Monday. "Sydney is hardly a convenient stopover on their way home from the Gulf of Aden. What's the story here?"

However, Medcalf soon answered his own question, tweeting that it "looks like a serious show of presence in the South Pacific."

It will be fascinating to learn why a Chinese navy task group, likely with PLA marines embarked, is in Sydney. Any claim they are just on their way home from the Gulf of Aden makes no sense. This looks like a serious show of presence in the South Pacific https://t.co/nbdqiTZmLP

    — Rory Medcalf (@Rory_Medcalf) June 3, 2019

The city's daily paper, the Sydney Morning Herald, fumed Monday that the visit was happening "only 24 hours before the 30th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre" and accused Canberra of "playing down" the visit.

The UK's Daily Mail called it a "secret visit," and Australia's Seven News reported it as a "surprise visit." Much has also been made of the fact that the ships arrived while the prime minister was on a state visit to the Solomon Islands, seeming to suggest the Chinese ships snuck in behind his back.

"It may have been a surprise to others, but it certainly wasn't a surprise to the government," Morrison said at a press conference in Honiara, the Solomon Islands' capital. While the government never announced the visit publicly, "we have known about that for some time," he said.

Noting it was a "reciprocal visit" following the visit of Australian ships to the People's Republic, Morrison warned that "any reading into timing could be subject to a bit of overanalysis."

Morrison's trip, ironically enough, was aimed at turning the Pacific island chain away from China by offering it a $173 million aid package, AFP noted. It was the prime minister's first overseas trip since his Liberal Party won the federal elections last month.

"The People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navy visit might have been intended as an act of diplomacy, but it's turning into a public relations disaster for China," John Fitzgerald, a China scholar at Swinburne University in Melbourne, told the South China Morning Post.

One reason for the soreness Down Under is that last week, a Chinese fishing vessel in the South China Sea forced several Australian helicopters flying from the Australian navy's flagship, the HMAS Canberra, to land during drills by pointing lasers at them, Sputnik reported.

The Australian Defense Force said in a statement, "Port visits are conducted by all navies to undertake basic logistics and resupply activities, low-level maintenance and provide valuable opportunities for crew respite," also noting, "The Australian Government is committed to maintaining a long-term constructive relationship with China, founded on shared interests and mutual respect."

However, that's not to say that Canberra doesn't see Beijing as a key regional rival. Australia's Naval Shipbuilding Plan, drawn up in 2017, laid out an ambitious $65.3 billion blueprint for naval expansion catered towards answering Chinese naval power in the Pacific and the South China Sea.

"While there is concern that Australia risks becoming a casualty of US-China rivalry, it is clear on both sides of politics that China, not the US actions, is to be feared," Binoy Kampmark, senior lecturer at the School of Global, Urban and Social Studies at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, told Sputnik last August via email. What he called "striking," however, was the lack of criticism of Australia's huge recent outlays to upgrade its sea power, "other than [from] activist groups who insist that Australia is too closely aligned to Washington's interests."

"Australian diplomacy in recent years has been trying to capitalize on the fears of various Asian countries (Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore) on the rise of China, though it always subordinates this to Washington's dictates," Kampmark said."

One can only surmise that as their mistress and master, Lizzie and goldilocks, were busy downing roast beef and Coca-Cola on the other side of the world nobody knew how to react without permission/guidance from above.

"Morrison's trip, ironically enough, was aimed at turning the Pacific island chain away from China by offering it a $173 million aid package,"

    Clinched the deal.

Was that a gift from the OZ taxpayer, normal international loan rates, standard Bank of Australia commercial OZ citizens lone rates or free from the 5 Eyes slush fund? Let's hope it doesn't increase the Solomon Islands debt too much.

I'm sure it will all be spent buying OZ equipment, commodities or "services. The Chinese best offers will politely be declined.

Australia: Man who swallowed gecko probably contracted parasite

    4 July 2019

Queensland father David Dowell, who died 10 days after swallowing a gecko, may have died from a parasitic tapeworm common in Asian house geckos rather than salmonella poisoning.

Doctors have told news.com.au Dowell's symptoms — a distended stomach, black urine and green bile — are more extreme than salmonella and evidence of an abdominal obstruction and liver failure.

Dowell died in "absolute agony" at the age of 34 in Brisbane's Mater Hospital last December after eating a gecko as a dare at a pre-Christmas party.

After feeling like he was hungover for days after the party, Dowell was taken to hospital where he began vomiting green bile, his urine turned black, and his stomach was so bloated he looked six months pregnant.

His lungs had also started to fill with fluid, fluid leaked from his stomach, and "his testicles were swollen up to grapefruits and there was fluid leaking from them".

A doctor told news.com.au Dowell had all the symptoms of a stomach obstruction coupled with fluid in his interabdominal cavity and scrotal oedema.

The doctor said the other symptoms were of liver failure, and they sounded extreme for salmonella poisoning.

Dowell died in surgery, leaving behind his partner Allira and three daughters.

Barton said while reptiles commonly carried salmonella, geckos were also host to other parasites.

"Asian house geckos carry the larval stage of various things, pentastomes which go into the lungs of snakes, nematodes or roundworms and the larval tapeworms that go into cats," she said.

I like the little buggers (asian gecko).

Where I live we used to get heaps of cockroaches and, about 15 years ago, the black widow/redback spider.

Now, we get few Cockroaches, few spiders and haven't seen a black widow/redback spider for years.

There used to be heaps of geckos around, but now their numbers have dropped, I presume because the quantity
of their food sources has diminished.
Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago ...
