    Trip to Australia

I love to travel and decided to finally visit Australia. I cashed in some frequent flyer miles and flew down on Cathay Pacific: Manila, KH, Sydney.

Rode the bus to Manila (Pasay) then a taxi stopped and offered me a ride to NAIA for 300 pesos, only He already had one passenger, so I ignored him. The other passenger says "Sir, you pay 100 pesos and I pay the rest. I confirm it with the driver and we're off Yeah I know that depending on the traffic, with the meter on the fare can be as low as P120, but P100 was the best deal I was going to get

Flight to HK is ok, check in is efficient and I hit the lounge. Man there is a huge CP business class lounge in HK and I chowed down on the delicious food. Board my flight and Sydney here I come!

Fairly smooth flight, another meal and I hit the sack. Woke up the next morning about 1.5 hours from Sydney and checked out the landscape- pretty desolate down there.

Landed and since I travel light with a carry on backpack, I was through Immigration quickly. My passport was scanned, no ink stamp and I'm on my way. +1 Australia!

Bought an Opal card and headed to North Sydney, where I had booked a room for three nights through Booking.com Nice older neighborhood and I could walk to Sydney Harbor from there

I stayed at North Sydney for three nights. I was excited to try an Aussie beer, so I stroll in to a pub and asked the bar maid if she could recommend s strong tasting Aussie beer.

    I threw her...

BM "I don't know what you mean by strong taste?"

Me "You know, flavorful" BM "No I don't know what you mean by flavorful!"

    Legaly blonde

Fortunately an older barman nudged her aside and said "Try this one mate; if that's not strong enough, then try this one and then this one."

Man, three free sample; I'm liking this country!

But yeah, its not cheap, I think I paid $12 AUS for a pint.

Another thing that impressed me about Sydney is that drivers actually yield the right of way to pedestrians, lol! Yeah, I know that's how its supposed to be, but I've been in Third World countries too long and that's not the way it goes down. The cars would even stop "As I approached the curb."

Yeah, we all need a dose of civilization occasionly

If you're still in Oz and visiting Brisbane, send me a PM. Of all Teakdoor members, I've only ever met Iceman.

If they let me return I just might do that buddy. Man the weather sure does change in Sydney. I thought December was summer time down under; I had to wear my Argentine wool sweater a couple of days

    Ditto for Melbourne

My Samsung S3 died on the flight from HK to Sydney, so I went shopping. JB Hi Fi (I think that's correct; yellow background with large black letters) had the best price. I opted for the Oppo F1 Selfie because it has 16 mega pixel front and rear facing cameras, 32 gig internal memory and it was basically the cheapest in that category

The salesman knocked another 10% off and the nice Aussie government rebates the VAT at the airport, so what's not to like?

    Knob-in-sheep scenario?

    Lulu, you filthy fucker!

I've been to Sydney but I didn't like it. However, I put that down to being fresh off the back-end of a six-month bender in South-East Asia, a time during which I would reach the outskirts of acute psychosis and you can keep ya 'roos and ya opera houses and ya beachside barbies and give me my fucking brain back.

I'd would, though - now that I have my brain back - love to travel through the outback at some stage - coast to coast.

^ did you see MeMock The Tosser's thread about flying across Aussie in his helicopter?

Did another one I think about doing it by land with his mates, and another member on here, Jonny Longprong.

Wayne Kerr also did an amazing Aussie thread about buying some amazing Queensland rainforest and building a shack up in it.

Not to make Lancelot feel inadequate or anything, I'm sure you had a lovely 3 days there mate.

After three nights I moved to Kings Cross. Interesting area with some colorful characters lol. There was a sidewalk cafe run by a Chinese family. I ate several $10 steak dinners there

Champion bud. I lived on Victoria Street just behind the cross, til I was hauled off by the rozzers.

The Ice Box was a great club, and 77 down Washington St.

Check out the movie Two Hands with Heath ledger in it, a lot of it is shot around there.

Thanks for the movie tip. I walked all over that part of town, down to the Navy base and old Immigrant Pier. Sydney has done a great job of preserving the older parts of town.

Enjoyed my seven nights in Sydney, but Oz is a huge country and I was burning days. Off to the Train Station on Sydney's excellent public transportation system and on to Canberra!

Lodging was going to be my greatest expense, so I was looking for discounts. Booking.com worked OK and My Citi CC has a Fourth Night Free benefit that I used twice. But I had the best success with AirBNB. I would search the area I wanted to stay in, then send the host an email, introduce myself and offer 60 to 70% of their asking price, for a last minute stay- 72 hours or less. Yeah some were offended but others were perfectly willing to deal
