I stayed two nights in Canberra with an AirBNB host. Didn't do much the first night but had a great Indian meal. The restaurants had multiple business hours; open for lunch, then close until supper. Reminded me of when I was a kid, many business would close at noon on Thursday and of course all day Sunday.

So my parents could drag me off to church, lol

The second day I caught the bus to the Australian War Memorial, what a great museum! I spent all day there

Aussies are great; spontaneous and clever with banter I get on the bus and the driver asks me straight faced: "Do you have a phone?"

    Yeah he threw me

    Me "Uh yes, why?"

Driver "Can you call the police and have the guy behind you arrested?"

Laughter all around; I managed to (some what) recover and added "Yeah, he does look a bit shifty." More laughter and a fun ride.

Spent all day at the War memorial; what an excellent museum! In 1914 Australia had a population of less than five million; 416,809 enlisted; 60,000+ killed and 156,000+ wounded, gassed or taken prisoner. (Per the Australian War Memorial)

Except it's really expensive and the cities are boring outside of the two big ones. Sydney and Melbourne have a lot of entertainment but the rest are sleepy.
I had a blast; Waga Waga is not that big but still great people and I was never bored.

Its a crackler innit. Never gets old that place. Got a Me163 in the aircraft gallery (only operational rocket powered fighter in history) as well as a complete Avro Lancaster (I am sure you did not miss it!).

There are a stack of Nazi machine guns in their storage room that belong to the GF. They were confiscated by customs when she emigrated to Aussie. Might actually be on display now. Haven't been there in a couple of years.

It really is buddy; yeah I say those planes and also the P51 Mustang. I was actually sorry that I couldn't spend another day.

Before I left, I went up to the list of Australians who died while serving I'm not Aussie, but surnames from both sides of my family were inscribed there.

A very moving memorial to the fallen...

Lancelot - I'm enjoying your thread. What nationality are you?

That's what was great about TD round 08/09, fookers going all around the World posting up their trips, a good few decent cooks putting up their recipes, decent photo threads of poster's lives in Thailand, CMN The Midgeteer, Timba's steakhouse, decent meetups, DD telling everyone to Fok Off at 3am.

    Where did you go Lance?

Copper Chimney is the best Indian in CBR for my money. Never miss a visit when I am down that way for work.
