Having just finished (over the past three evenings) watching The three Godfather movies I was inspired to hunt out my Cavalleria Rusticana CD and blow the dust off.
At what point, I wonder, was it decided to use the intermezzo as the closing music to Godfather III ? Several of the ideas in The Godfather III bear similarities to Cavaleria Rusticana which, itself, is based in Sicily, and in particular Vinnie biting Joey's ear during an embrace, drawing blood to signify a duel to the death. We see the corresponding embrace between Turiddu and Alfie in the Palermo opera scene later.
