The Book Club - Recommend /Review

After purchasing many books over recent months from the swap shops in Thailand
I thought it would be a good idea to have a book club to review and hopefully pick out some gems.

    To kick things off....

Its a New York best seller which was the first thing that attracted me to it.
Its the story of young lad who grew up most of his life without his Dad
and turned to his grandad for guidance.

The grandfathers classroom was the Local Bar in New York where JR grew up
with many different character's ,Some good ,Some bad and some just plane funny !

    Fantastic true story 8/10

Obviosuly Trainspotting was Irvine Welsh's master peice,I thought he would
go on in the same vein but his follow up PORNO was shockingly bad.

THE ICE MAN : PAUL CARLO
True story based on the confessions of Hit man - Richard Kuklinski

Im not a massive fan of these serial killer books but this gripped me
from the first page to the last.

Richard get's beaten and treated like a dog from his parents when he was a kid.
This creates a man who does not quiver about killing a man by whatever
means are the most entertaining,This includes being eaten by rats,Poisen,Gun shot,Frozen....

Read the book now before they finish the movie which should be out in the near future.

    Maurizio Peleggi

If you fancy contemporary {turn-of-the-century} Siamese historic critique and observations, than you might care to pick up Maurizio Peleggi's "Lords of Things: The Fashioning of the Siamese Monarchy's Modern Image". Quite original and striking, considering the discipline it falls under - Chulalongkorn era studies/scholarship - which is quite dense and overwhelmed these days. A decent and honest survey.

Nice insight into the world of an up and coming movie star.
The most interesting Movie diary was the one for Withnail and I.Talks in depth
about the audition process and feel of the movie when he wan an unknown.
Other Movie Diaries notes in the book include - Hudson Hawk - La Story.

I never really liked Richard E Grant until after I read this book,I have since downloaded most of his movies .

    8/10
I wish more actors would write film diaries like this.

Kill Your Friends by John Niven.

Fans of Irvine Welsh might enjoy this. As a pop-culture shocker it blows most of Welsh's books clear out the water.

The books protagonist Steven Stelfox is a record company A&R man in the height of the UK 90's "Britpop"-era music industry.
He is the most racist, horrible, coke-snorting psychopath in any book I've ever read.
Also the funniest. Hardcore black humour at its best. I re-read it about 4 times already, fuggin hilarious.

^ I haven't even started it yet, but I enjoyed 100 years of solitude, and south america has some great writers, so I thought I'd attempt to go beyond Grisham and his ilk...

I actually had the full lot, but lost no 3 shortly after moving to Thailand...

Not hard - his books are shite.

This book, on the other hand, is simply amazing.

An incredible story on a guy's fight against alcohol & drug abuse. Very readable & very moving.

I read this last week,Not the greatest biography I have ever read,He has the
general attitude of YEAH I SUPPOSE I COULD HAVE TRIED HARDER.

You would think that he only played for Luton and Celtic from the reports he gives in the book.West Ham,Coventry,Wimbledon,West Brom,Arsenal are given just an
    odd mention.

    6/10
Wait til it turns up in poundland !

Well whoever it is, he's probably happy that Luton are still an English club not full of foreignfallingoverfags.
