Best Metal albums for the years 1980 to 1989

This was harder than I thought! 1986 was easily the peak and I could've put any one of a dozen albums in there, but seeing as MoP is the best metal album ever, it's a no brainer.

1980 - Ozzy Osbourne | Blizzard of Ozz

1981 - Def Leppard | High and Dry

1982 - Iron Maiden | The Number of the Beast

1983 - Accept | Balls to the Wall

    1984 - Metallica | Ride the Lightning

    1985 - Yngwie Malmsteen | Marching Out

    1986 - Metallica | Master of Puppets
(although Slayer's Reign in Blood and Megadeth's Peace Sells... also came out this year)

    1987 - Testament | The Legacy

    1988 - Queensr˙che | Operation: Mindcrime

    1989 - Badlands | Badlands

There was a VH1 special on a whiles back on much the same thing, a few familiar names from your list were in that too (although can't remember exactly what/who, bit too long ago now).

Just finished reading Sound of the Beast: The Complete Headbanging History of Heavy Metal by Ian Christie. Not a bad read. Might be tough to find in LOS though. Comes with an appendix or three, the first of which lists the "Best 25 Heavy Metal Albums of All Time". (BTW, I whole-heartedly agree about MoP.)

    According to Christie, they are...

    AC/DC - Back in Black
    Angel Witch - Angel Witch
Bathory - Under the Sign of the Black Mark
    Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath
    Carcass - Heartwork
Celtic Frost - To Mega Therion
    Destruction - Infernal Overkill
Dream Death - Journey into Mystery
Emperor - In the Nightside Eclipse
    Exodus - Bonded by Blood
Holy Terror - Terror and Submission
Immortal - Battles in the North
    Iron Maiden - Killers
Judas Priest - Unleashed in the East
    Kreator - Terrible Certainty
    Mercyful Fate - Melissa
    Metallica - Ride the Lightning
Morbid Angel - Formulas Fatal to the Flesh
Motley Crue - Shout at the Devil
    Motorhead - Overkill
Napalm Death - Fear, Emptiness, Despair
    Rainbow - Rising
Saxon - The Eagle Has Landed
    Slayer - Hell Awaits
    Voivod - Dimension Hatross

There were some on this list I wasn't familiar with and so I looked for some of their songs on youtube. Can't remember if I posted them in the "What you're listening to now" thread or not.

There was a nice piece on Lemmy in Rolling Stone a month or two ago. The man is intense. Here's the RS teaser: Motorhead’s Lemmy Kilmister: Vampire of the Sunset Strip : Rolling Stone : Rock and Roll Daily. You can probably find the full article on-line somewhere.

Angel Witch - Angel Witch (Sounds dated)
Bathory - Under the Sign of the Black Mark (Never got into them)
Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath (Superb, but 10 years too old)
Carcass - Heartwork (Never got into them)
Celtic Frost - To Mega Therion (Too weird for me)
Destruction - Infernal Overkill (Never got into them)
Dream Death - Journey into Mystery (Never got into them)
Emperor - In the Nightside Eclipse (Never got into them)
Exodus - Bonded by Blood (Sounds dated)

Immortal - Battles in the North (Never got into them)
Iron Maiden - Killers (Better than NotB??!! WTF??!!)
Judas Priest - Unleashed in the East (Hairy muff)
Kreator - Terrible Certainty (Ho hum)
Mercyful Fate - Melissa (A cult album at best)
Metallica - Ride the Lightning (Good, but not as good as MoP)
Morbid Angel - Formulas Fatal to the Flesh (Never got into them)
Motley Crue - Shout at the Devil (Not as ground-breaking at Too Fast for Love)
Motorhead - Overkill (And not Ace of Spades??)
Napalm Death - Fear, Emptiness, Despair (Crap)
    Rainbow - Rising (Average)
Saxon - The Eagle Has Landed (Not as good as Denim & Leather)
Slayer - Hell Awaits (Good, but not Reign in Blood)
Voivod - Dimension Hatross (Too avant garde for me)

It seems this Christie bloke is trying to be too 'smart' by choosing left-of-field stuff or albums that are quite simply not the best from particular artists.

Marmite, seems you have only listened to "mainstream" metal and have based your selection accordingly.

Christies list i think is a very good reflection (according to my tastes) yours is still a worthy list though.

If you mean that I don't like some bloke grunting for 40 minutes over a melody-less wall of noise, then yes, but each to their own.

It still doesn't account for Christie's list which omits the best albums from a given artist and replaces it with a clearly inferior one.

I think Christie was going for (at least somewhat) some street cred with his list. He definitely chose some of the more esoteric stuff out there. However, if you read the book, it's not all out of left field. He chose those albums that he thinks best represent certain eras and styles of metal. They may not be the most "listenable" albums (things I enjoy listening to would be what I would choose for "best") but they're the albums that he thinks broke ground, moved the genre in a different direction, or what have you.

I know what you're saying, but I enjoy the Badlands album more, especially when The Real Thing is shown up as being immature when compared to Angel Dust.

So where's your list? Bladdy whinging Poms....

Ill get onto it. The Real Thing was/is a great album, turn of the decade and broke new ground in some ways.

Dont get me started on Motley Crue, bunch of fucking hairspray wankers.

I saw them at Hammersmith Odeon in about 87. Quite a good show, but Vince Neil can't sing for toffee.

Like a lot of the stuff you folks have noted.
I like "Guns n' Roses - Appetite For Destruction" as well.

You've left out one of the best hard rock albums ever made.
However much I like Blizzard of Oz I'm hereby replacing it with Trust's Repression, kick arse heavy rock with a message (the French version, not the English)!

Also replace the kids from Def Leppard with Rush's Moving Pictures, another classic. (I know back then Rick Allen still had 2 arms but he was an amateur compared to Neil Peart).

I'll try and think up some more later.

If you're saying that a Frog album is better than the masterpiece that is Blizzard of Ozz, then I shall laugh in your face.

Quite possible but I never got into Rush, so you'll have to do your own list won't you?

Laugh all you want, personal tastes and all that.
Unfortunately both albums were released in '81 and while I loved Ozzy's debut I remember playing the Trust album to smithereens, couldn't get enough of it.

It's a bit difficult doing a list myself because I sort of went off metal around '85 and don't know much about the stuff released after that.
