ONE OF THESE is that despite its legacy of decidedly mixed uses — and a few stubborn environmental hangnail hot spots — the lake is generally cleaner and more vital these days than it once was. (It's even safe to swim in, assuming one doesn't stir up and eat the bottom sediments, a water-quality expert says.)
