Theatre - 'The Life of Galileo', by Bertold Brecht, by the ATC

We decided to spoil ourselves and went to the theatre to experience Bertold Brecht's 'The Life of Galileo', performed by the Auckland Theatre Company.

As an added bonus we had booked to attend the EAT/TALK/PLAY pre-show event, which includes listening to guest speaker discuss the deeper aspects of the play (and the play is deeeep if you want it to be - typical Brecht) . . . while sipping a glass of wine and munchies.

Unfortunately we were delayed leaving home . . . missed it. Bugger. They're usually quite good. $75,- down the drain . . . and no wine.

Galileo is played by one of NZ's best actors, Michael Hurst and he nails it . . . an inspiring choice for Sarti was/is Ravikanth Gurunathan - excellent as well. Rima te Iwata was also very impressive as Cardinal Barberini.

Yes, the story is about Galileo, but this play focusses on the Roman Inquisition of Galileo's proof that the earth revolves around the sun, but Brecht really brings to the fore that it may have been 400 years ago . . . but it's still the case today (and in Brecht's times) that those in power ignore science as it poses a threat to their lust for control.
(Trump, Bolsonaro, Johnson etc... ring a bell?)

All in all a bit heavy but very, very good. I know there are a few Kiwis here and I'd absolutely recommend it and if anyone else has a chance elsewhere - go for it.

I don't know if anyone else likes live theatre . . . but it's a nice change from the movies.
