    Australian Auteurs

It has been ages since I worked through the catalogue of great Australian movies but this recent effort from Robert Conolly has inspired me to do so

    The Dry

Atmospheric Aussie outback extravaganza with Eric Bana as a cop returning to the home town he was ostracised from 20 years earlier.

The landscape makes for mesmerising cinematography.

Kind of reminded me of the 2006 mood murder drama Jindabyne which I am now trying to download again after 15 years.

    8/10

Awesome scenery for movie makers but not somewhere you want to live

Yup, watched it recently and mentioned it in the movie thread - an excellent movie, awesome scenery and background (but yes, not where you'd want to live)

Bana is a brilliant actor and my 15-year old daughter couldn't believe this was the guy from the Hulk movie.

Downloading as we write, but it's horribly slow and stops - seeds and peers missing

Getting more and more into Aussie films and movies, they make a nice contrast to the Brit and US stuff . . . I could recommend lots of good German stuff but it's in German and therefore not applicable to most here, in terms of understanding.

A series we recently watched in the same vein, Mystery Road - a must watch.

If you haven't watched Kenny, do. It's a great movie- up there with Spinal Tap as the best mockumentary ever. Hilarious.
Last Cab to Darwin- very nice movie, seems to have gone largely unnoticed.

Note to self- must download "The Year of Living Dangerously" again. Haven't seen it for yonks, but great stuff.
And if you haven't watched The Castle, where have you been all your life? Bogans are alright!

^ He lives in Melbourne now- he's made plenty of dough, and I don't think he cares much for the Hollywood bubble. Family man, 2 kids. I'm sure he picks up a fair wedge for acting in aussie productions like The Dry- but a fraction of what he could earn doing standard Hollywood dross.

Certainly neither 'mesmerising' nor one of the 'great Australian movies'.
    An average mystery.
They at least managed to make the ending less silly than in the novel.

Snowtown - now there's a good Aussie crime movie. Streets better than this.

    Got my titles mixed up.

Animal Kingdom was good too, though.

First saw him in The Castle (brilliant movie, still laugh just thinking about the Lawyer and his photocopier)

    Then who could forget Poider

And mad respect for his car affectionately named The Beast that he put into a tree but had her rebuilt to pre-race condition.

He's one of those actors that seems to be content just picking a movie he really want to do occasionally, I think he's great and wish he'd do more work though.

He made a film about that, 'Love The Beast' or similar? Can't quite remember now.

Doco on his prep for the Targa Tasmania. Pretty good from what I recall.

I thought the dry was pretty good - and the outback scenery really struck a chord.

Snowtown - south oz - full of churches and serial killers eh. really good as cyrille says

A couple of lesser known -
Bliss (based on the peter carey book)

^He really does come across as being a nice guy, the sort of bloke that'd be great to have a few beers with and talk fast cars.

Down here in Adelaide, we consider Snowtown a documentary.

Just googled Aussies best movies, found an extensive list of 25 of them
Muriels Wedding, Australia, Crocodile Dundee, Priscilla Queen of the desert and Home and Away the movie all high up the list

Chopper, starring Eric Bana looks interesting.
Might give that a whirl on a wet Wednesday afternoon, once the footy finishes.
