    Generation X, The gatekeepers!

    A list by paddlesteamer

    [List292860] | | +28

Gen-X were often defined through the horror film genre.
Generation X, originally known as the Baby Bust Generation, were born, according to most sources, between 1964 or 1965 and the end of 1980. They are outnumbered by the Baby Boomers in the US alone by some 30 million members, which is why their tastes have so often seemed marginal or 'alternative'. Open any 60s band on youtube and you will still find thousands of Baby Boomers suggesting all music since 1990 is garbage. Living in the shadow of the Baby Boomers, Generation X adopted the guerrilla tactics of the underdog: irony, skepticism of authority, and a refusal to subscribe to narrow definitions of self. Baby Boomer cultural critics typically misunderstood or pilloried these tactics. Wrapped up in an idealized narrative of their own 1960s activism, they saw Gen X as amoral and irresponsible- a view which was imposed as far back as the late 1960s, when a series of 'devil child' movies began to appear. The deeper truth may be that the Boomers were guilty of a kind of inter-generational oppression, marginalizing Gen-X voices and perspectives in mainstream media and privileging their own political agenda over Gen-X skepticism of corporations, mass marketing and mainstream media versions of 'the truth'. [This list has been expanded to include all birth dates of the included artists. I consider it to be the core but not the totality of any Gen-X musical canon.]

The point is that Gen-X just don't feel anything from manufactured music, Give it to us raw, and keep your Justin BEAVER's to the sound studio.

It's obvious that the "gen X" has the most flexible social attitude!, but when we see stupidity we don't hesitate to call it out. It's not as though we are smarter, we are just balanced and can see what that "social justice" will do in the future.

What I like about Gen Xers is that they hate boomers too. For the most part.

I grew up in the shadow of Gen Xers. They were a rough bunch in the 90's. I never fucked with them.

Can yo see now, we have the range of music from listening to it at home or in the car as a little kid, and then going to live bands and concerts in our teens and 20's. and then we had cd's, we had records, tapes, cd's and then mp3's. lol

I basically find this Boomer/ Gen-X/ Millennial stuff very contrived. But then again, I suppose sociology types (Gods gift to arts degrees) have got to draw some borders and differentiations, so they can then use their government grant money to try and tell people what they really are like, what they really think, and why.

Generation X, were born between 1964 or 1965 and the end of 1980
Which of course makes me a boomer, yeh yeh, born in 1960 (61st birthday coming up)

But my tastes in music, and the music I rocked to growing up, fit right in with what you term Gen X music deeks- Floyd/ Zep/ Dacca/ Sabbath/ Pistols etc. Oh, and even we could be sensitive new age guys sometimes, when done headbanging or being spaced out on Floyd- Neil Young/ Dire Straits/ Beatles/ Dylan/ Cohen etc. I think we just took a few more drugs.

You see, what really is the difference between someone born in 1960 (Boomer, I'm told) and 1964 (Gen Xer!)? It's all a bit contrived and artificial. Here are a couple of typical Baby Boomers, to whet your intellectual appetite-

    Do they fit your stereotype?

That's funny- we always thought they were a bit soft. New Romantics.

If I can paint with a very broad brush, Gen Xers grew up with affluence. Boomers parents however, were mostly pretty poor- on our side of the pond, anyway. We, so to speak, grew up into affluence. Millennials don't even know what poor means (unless of course they cannot afford the latest iPhone), and thus invent things to call problems.

Anyway, good music deeks. Did you think boomers grew up with Elvis Parsley & The Platters? Not the ones I know- that were the Oldies.

But kudos where due- Grunge!! Yeh, that's Gen-X product, and boomers like me lapped it up too.

I first heard Pearl Jam in a dive bar in Honolulu. Great stuff- Nirvana had reached us aussies, but not the Jam. Great stuff! Loved it, and still remember the night to this day.

You get it sabang, and i would bet $1000 bucks that if all of the posters on TD got together and had a mash up music party we all would make some good friends.
