^ Well, that book reminded me a lot of my mum, not that she was ever a sleuth but the language and diary of Joyce was very familiar.

Next up is: "The Chestnut Man", by Søren Sveistrup.

It's a good read with the police on the track of a serial killer in Copenhagen.

Fevers, Feuds, and Diamonds: Ebola and the Ravages of History
    by Paul Farmer

In 2014, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Guinea suffered the worst epidemic of Ebola in history. The brutal virus spread rapidly through a clinical desert where basic health-care facilities were few and far between. Causing severe loss of life and economic disruption, the Ebola crisis was a major tragedy of modern medicine. But why did it happen, and what can we learn from it?

Paul Farmer, the internationally renowned doctor and anthropologist, experienced the Ebola outbreak firsthand--Partners in Health, the organization he founded, was among the international responders. In Fevers, Feuds, and Diamonds, he offers the first substantive account of this frightening, fast-moving episode and its implications. In vibrant prose, Farmer tells the harrowing stories of Ebola victims while showing why the medical response was slow and insufficient. Rebutting misleading claims about the origins of Ebola and why it spread so rapidly, he traces West Africa's chronic health failures back to centuries of exploitation and injustice. Under formal colonial rule, disease containment was a priority but care was not - and the region's health care woes worsened, with devastating consequences that Farmer traces up to the present.

This thorough and hopeful narrative is a definitive work of reportage, history, and advocacy, and a crucial intervention in public-health discussions around the world.

^ Wow, I read Mountain beyond Mountains, (possibly even reviewed here) which is an account of his life story. Amazing dedication to his work to the poor! I'll be looking that book up.

I'm currently reading A Time to Betray by Reza Khalili - a true account of an Iranian who worked as an agent for the CIA and moved back home to Iran after the 1979 revolution by Ayatollah Khomeini.

so far so good, still reading.

    John Grisham: The Last Juror
Tales by young man who bought local weekly The Ford County Times, reporting on crimes and other events of small Southern town in 1970s.

Enjoying his witty style of drawing fictive characters of locals, adding the circumstances and situation of that era in that time.

A.o. reporting on funeral of a local boy, brought from Vietnam in a box. Quite a strong language to the local people who had little knowledge what's going on in the world and in their own country as well.

(When reading that it's quite clear why this bestseller author had no longer been welcome in Hollywood, despite his few blockbusters in 1990s.)

Hunter Biden's autobiography 'Beautiful Things' sells just 10,000 copies in its first week despite his massive publicity push

Hunter's autobiography sold a disappointing 10,638 in its first week on shelves

Quickly sank to number 208 on the Amazon Best Seller's list from number 5

It came despite Hunter Biden's international media blitz to promote the book

It's on Netflix now as a series apparently. It was pretty good but the plot was all too similar and I'd guessed the killer half way through. I read it only until the killer was identified and then it wasn't worth bothering about the ending (last 50 pages or so).

Now I'm reading "Invisible Girl" by Lisa Jewell, another author I have not read before.

I was just wondering whether is mentioned in the "Beautiful Things" the smear campaign that a foreign country disseminated about allegedly his notebook... (but perhaps it could have been lost in translation....)

Why would anyone care about Hunter Biden, other than that they could hurt the President or further their political ambitions? If there was anything there that Joe Biden did anything illegal in connection with his son, the Republicans would had used it already, and they certainly would not find it in Hunters book.

Of course there is something. Or do you truly believe that under current political situation the Republicans can start an impeachment on Bidens like it was imposed on Trump? (What a coincidence, both are also about Ukraine, a.o...)

Anyway, some kind of investigation has been proceeded. However, under the current political situation...

Iron Coffins. A surviving U boat commanders story.

The U boat war was fuct up. By the end , brainwashed young men 40 at a time were being sent out and sunk to the bottom on their first voyage. 40 ,000 men died slowly sinking to their death in a dark cold cocoon.

PEN America offered a grim assessment this week of the status of freedom of expression. In the introduction to “Freedom to Write Index 2020,” the editors say, “Political leaders the world over -- in autocracies and fragile democracies alike -- have used the pandemic and protest movements as an excuse to further constrain rights.”

PEN America estimates that last year at least 273 writers in 35 countries were in prison or being held in detention for their work. Some have died in custody. China along with U.S. allies Saudi Arabia and Turkey are the worst offenders -- responsible for about half the cases. Iran, Egypt and Belarus have increased their repression of writers and artists, too.

Outrages like these taking place in foreign countries can induce a feeling of helplessness. But there are modest steps you can take:

    • Support PEN America’s work by making a donation.
    • Tell your political representatives that encouraging freedom of expression around the world is important to you.
    • Sign petitions demanding the release of writers.
    • Don’t support repressive governments with your tourist dollars.

The Longest Siege: Tobruk, The Battle That Saved North Africa
    by Robert Lyman

this has been good and easy to read - lots of stories from the men on the ground on both sides

Beginning on 10th April 1941, and lasting for 240 days, the siege of Tobruk is a mesmerising tale of human endurance and heroism. It is an epic story of extraordinary resilience as the Libyan port's 24,000 defenders met increasingly desperate attempts by Rommel's Panzer divisions to break through the hurriedly thrown-up defences. It was a battle of bayonets and grenades against tanks, of David versus Goliath.

The eventual allied victory came against overwhelming odds, plus the morale sapping knowledge that the defenders were surrounded on one side by the sea, and on the other by Hitler's men and machines (who, only the year before, had brought Western Europe to its knees). Tobruk was defended in the main by the Australian 9th Division, followed by the British 70th Infantry Division who then linked up with the advancing 8th Army. The Royal Navy also played an important role in Tobruk's defence. By December 1941 Rommel had been beaten and forced to withdraw his forces from Cyrenaica. The siege was lifted and the exhausted, gallant defenders able to march out in triumph.

My mum sent me this for my Birthday and I'm just getting into it. It's a good read.

She also sent me a tiny one egg frying pan... I sometimes wonder what she thinks my life in Isaan is like.
