    Woody Allen Movies

Just recently rewatched a few of Woody Allen's movies and they are still good value and have aged well I think.

Some people find his screen persona/appearance grating but I have never really had a problem with it and he does not appear so much in his later stuff.

I just watched his movie Annie Hall from 1977. I don't think I had ever seen it before - I was expecting to remember it but it was all new. Still quite sharp even after 40 years.

After watching Annie Hall (1977) I watched Hannah and Her Sisters (1986) and Crimes and Misdemeanours (1989) and The Purple Rose of Cairo (1985). Woody Allen's stuff is still quite fresh and even a little philosophically thought provoking at times I think.

His more recent one Blue Jasmine was very good I thought. I watched Midnight in Paris quite a few times since it came out in 2011 before I discovered it was a Woody Allen movie.

I have many still to watch/rewatch so if anybody has any recommendations post them up.

Woody Allen appeals to sophisticated urban tastes. Rubes universally dislike him because they don't get it.

Anyway, Match Point is very good, fairly recent film. Sweet and Lowdown is fantastic. Zelig is priceless.

^ You'd think even rubes would enjoy Sleeper, Everything You Wanted To Know About Sex, and Bananas.

You mean his foster daughter. The one he married I presume you mean.
An artist's morals and personal behavior has nothing to do with their creative output. Da Vinci and Michaelangeo were pederasts. Joyce and Hemingway were alcholics. Kesey and Burroughs were drug addicts. It's necessary to seperate the art and artist's behavior.

^It is their 20th wedding anniversary next year and he says he stopped 37 years of psychoanalysis (neuroticism being a recurring theme in much of his work) the year they married.

When I was watching Hannah and Her Sisters last week I noticed a pre-adolescent Asian girl as a party guest in one of the scenes near the end and google revealed that it was indeed an uncredited Soon Yi Previn.

There is something a tad creepy about forming a relationship with a female who was your former partner's adopted daughter but 20 years is a longer marriage than most.

EYWTKAS. I sneaked in to a cinema when I was under age to watch that movie and remember thinking it was brilliant. Watched it again last year, or tried to watch it. Neither funny nor interesting just awful and dated.

^^I can't remember his early stuff although I think I did see Everything You Wanted To Know About Sex (1972?) when I was younger. But from what I have read Annie Hall (1977) was when he switched over to more thought-provoking treatments rather than trying pure comedy. I am only familiar with his later stuff after Annie Hall.

He's over 80 now I think and he still hasn't made an Army movie. Maybe there's hope for you yet?

Woody Allen belongs in the category of directors whose worst offerings are infinitely better than most of Hollywood's annual production.

He produces/directs a film a year and I have yet to watch a really dud one although there are times when he gets near.

Vicky Christina Barcelona was a marvellous return to directorial top form and a master class of acting between Bardem and Cruz, gorgeously facilitated by Johannson and Rebecca Hall.

Watch it and enjoy, Davis, before persisting with your crass generalisation.

I liked Midnight in Paris but his London trilogy was less appealing as indeed was his foray around Rome.

Out of all his work, my favourite was Broadway Danny Rose in which he transcended his genre and produced a real piece of New York Americana. A peach of a movie and as watchable today as it was 25 years ago.

Kesey was not a drug addict.

Good call. One of his very best. Sad and funny. The Thanksgiving dinner scene was brilliant.

    What's up Tiger Lily?

Woody Allen taking a Japanese spy B-movie and dubbing on new dialogue. Good idea and not seen it done before or since to my knowledge.

    Trailer.

    Movie.

sure, it's messed up that he technically married his stepdaughter, but let's not forget "the heart wants what it wants".

anyway, he's one of the last true auteurs of cinema, and the audience must try and separate his personal life from his art. of course that's not easy (especially considering the frequent subject matter of his work) but it's necessary.
