The Who to headline Glastonbury Festival

The Who to headline Glastonbury Festival

The Who have been confirmed as Glastonbury Festival's final headliner, closing the event on Sunday 28 June.

The rock band join Foo Fighters and Kanye West at the top of the bill for the sold out festival next month.

Roger Daltrey said The Who would "close this year's event with a bang".

The band will also headline the British Summertime Hyde Park festival with a show on Friday 26 June, supported by Paul Weller, Kaiser Chiefs, Johnny Marr and Gaz Coombes.

Paul Weller will also play before The Who at Glastonbury, in the penultimate Sunday night slot on the Pyramid Stage.

The band said they would take the audience on an "amazing journey" through The Who's back catalogue, including classic albums such as Who's Next, Tommy, Quadrophenia and My Generation.

"It's great to be ending this part of a 50-year career at the most prestigious and respected music festival in the world," said Daltrey.

"We'll do our best to close this year's event with a bang, unless of course the fireworks get wet!"

The Who made their first and only Glastonbury headline appearance in 2007, when they also closed the festival. They ended their set with a five song medley from the concept album Tommy, starting with Pinball Wizard.

At the time Daltrey likened the band's performance, "after three days of horrendous weather", to the Battle of Passchendaele during World War One

"The conditions were horrendous and you think no one is going to stay to the end. It was like the 70s when the crowds got bigger," Daltry told The Sun.

Glastonbury confirmed 2015's final headliner on Twitter on Wednesday, writing: "We're delighted to announce that The Who will headline Sunday night, with Paul Weller playing the penultimate slot."

The Who are currently performing a career-spanning set on their world tour, The Who Hits 50.

I'm always embarrassed for these old geezers that find it necessary to promote themselves to the grave.

Can't we remember them as they were.

Seems to be quite the fashion to tour nostalgically vacant of original members.

[by the way - that's not The Who. It's Pete and Roger.]

Most people that really enjoy their work don't retire early.

If someone's still willing to pay them a shitload for just doing what they love, why not?

I saw the Stones a few years back, and Plant and Page. A bunch of old blokes ( me included ) having a great time!

Fuck me, that classic line must have haunted Townsend how many years now?

Entwhistle went the way most of us would pray for and I have grown up with The Who, brilliant music but just a shame that Townsend was alledged to have been
' researching child porn'. - tainted somewhat my memory of great music.

    Legal troubles[edit]
    Main article: Operation Ore
Besides his arrest for assaulting a police officer in 1967 and issues with destruction of property, Townshend was cautioned by British police as part of Operation Ore, a major investigation on child pornography conducted in 2002–2003. Townshend was placed on the sex offenders register for five years in 2003 after admitting he had used his credit card to access a website bearing the message "click here for child porn" four years earlier.[105][106] Later investigation showed that he had visited an ordinary porn site, and not one containing child porn.[107]

Only goes to show how talentless the modern musicians are. Sounds old boy, but music as we know it has gone forever, never to be repeated or decently replicated.

The Rolling Stones and The Who can never be bettered. I made the mistake of catching Steve Hackett's 'Genesis Revisited' tour in Notts and what utter shite it was. I mean, no-one could encapsulate the power of Gabriel as a lead singer but the the 'stand in' was atrocious, so bad, I had to leave half way through, as it pained me to listen. Surprised at Hackett's choice with the vocals.

Should have saved my dosh and had a foxtrot, lamb, nursery chyme, selling england sesh at home.

Ironically, it was Hackett I saw twice at scumland gaumont late 70s and too many years away in Twatland that inspired my indulgence to see and hear it again. Took my boys for the experience but they fell asleep, that's how crap it was. left half time.

Really, these old boys should leave it be. Last time I went to Glasto, Tom Jones was headline...where are the rock bands of today? It's all gone, hasn't it.

Growing up through the 60 and 70s must have been a Godsend

The Walking in mud in Thailand far surpasses walking in the mud of Glastonbury.

Saw them 20-25 years ago at the N.E.C Brum on one of their 'Farewell' tours.
Sound was woeful, the mixing dude must have been of his head.
I bet Weller will join them on stage at some point, should be good.

Ex-wife was a groupie for the Who back in 67, I suppose she was shagging them all for the price of stagedom...ended up with a set of broken drum sticks as her memory of her youth. Funny what people do for Rock Stars.

I think the Who did two shows at Charlton Athletic. I remember other support acts, Lou Reed and Humble Pie. I think it was the first time Lasers were used. Anyway, it was bloody loud, I can tell you that.

Saw the Qudadrophenia tour a couple of years ago in Toronto. Big 10 piece band, great show. Roger sounded and looked great. Only saw them once before, 1975.

There is a bar in Pattaya, near the R-Con corner that is mod themed with scooters etc.
Drank many a beer there but cannot remember the name, getting old.
