City signs B3.8bn Sukhumvit BTS extension

    City signs B3.8bn BTS extension
The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration yesterday signed a 3.8-billion-baht contract with Italian-Thai Development Plc to build the Sukhumvit road extension of the BTS skytrain. The firm will build the structure of the 5.25km elevated extension, including the train stations and tracks, from Onnut station along Sukhumvit road to Soi 107.

Project bidding took place on Oct 3, 2003 and the project won approval from the City Council on May 24 this year.

The BMA's traffic and transport office held talks with ITD, finalising the details and terms of the construction on June 16.

The project cost totals 4.05 billion baht, of which 3.87 billion baht will be spent on the extension construction.

A total of 186.3 million baht would be earmarked for the installation of electrical systems to be undertaken by the Metropolitan Electricity Authority.

Work on building the structure will begin next month. Construction is scheduled to take 30 months with the test-run to be held in 2008.

The missus said they were planning on extending either the MRT or BTS to Bangkapi or Nawamin area.

Can't remember what one it is now.

    Is that still happening?

Mrs Q - I drive the Rama IX expressway everyday, and they're certainly building what looks like an extension to the Skytrain. However, it appears to keep going down towards the Pataya freeway (towards the new airport), rather than along Ramakamhaeng road.

It's been interesting, because I have not read anything about this project, but un-Thai like, they're working real hard on it. I mean, you can actually see "daily" progress on this project, so someone has the shot-gun out

I hope that it is built up that way. Even if it is just the underground her apartment and/or house price would rise nicely.

The light rail heading for the new airport is actually an SRT (State Railways of Thailand), so, although it will look just like the Skytrain it will be administered by a totally different agency! It will go from Phaya Thai or Makassan to the new airport and should open in early 2008.

Unfortunately, it won't go anywhere near Ban Kapi, which is to bad, as the public transport out in that direction really sucks.

    ^ She's wrong.

It's the rail link to the airport, as qwerty said.
