Oh, well, if you're talking about music, then Manchester beats any other city in the world, never mind f'ing Liverpool.
But, as for the Ballet and Opera, I find that the variety and quality just isn't there these days, causing me to travel to Vienna.

The Hacienda wasn't all that. The hype well outstripped the reality of the place.
That said, Manchester was a special place to be in the late 80's and early 1990s even if you weren't into the whole 'Madchester' scene.
I remember during the golden Summer of 1990, hanging out in Piccadilly Gardens on Saturday afternoons (the pubs still closed between 3-5pm then!) with my skater mates drinking beers and having the crack with everyone from football thugs to japanese tourists. No hassle from the coppers as long as we never got too rowdy and there was always plenty of willing tail around as well......ah the memories......
Great city, made great by the combination of sound people, great pubs, lots of female students and a thriving rock scene.
Liverpool never has been a special place to be and it smells funny!!!
I'd packed in by the Cream days
