    Thailand slashes prices. (alledgedly)

    From The Sunday Times

Bargains for the brave – Thailand slashes prices

Prices of holidays in Thailand are to be cut in a bid to restore confidence following recent political unrest. The number of visitors has fallen by an estimated 50% since the week-long protests that closed Bangkok’s airports, and Thailand’s tourism authority says the episode will cost the country 3m visitors this season. To entice travellers to return, hotels are offering rooms for as little as half the published price.
It remains to be seen, though, how many will be brave enough to take advantage of the offers. Hoteliers have expressed fears that supporters of the ousted prime minister, Somchai Wongsawat, will cause yet more disruption, and the Thai ambassador, Kitti Wasinondh, was unable to rule out a repeat of the airport occupation. “Nobody can guarantee there will be no political tension,” he said. “But... it is my conviction the Thailand government will not let the Bangkok airports close again.”
Those who are willing to travel to Thailand should have no problem finding a bargain, said Chris Lee, of the long-haul specialist Travelmood. “The offers are flying in, no doubt about it,” he said. “Within the next week, both Thai Airways and EVA Air will be offering significant fare reductions to complement the great hotel deals coming up.”
Deals from Travelmood (0800 011 1945, www.travelmood.com ) include 10 nights for the price of five at the Regent Chalets, Cha-am, making a total of £699pp, including flights; and eight nights for the price of four at the four-star Cape Panwa hotel, in Phuket, now £799pp, including flights. The Four Seasons in Bangkok is offering every third night free, and the Centara Grand Beach Resort, in Ko Samui, has cut room rates from £205 to £1

Flight Centre (0870 499 0040, Cheap flights, holiday packages, hotels, car hire, touring and travel insurance | Flight Centre ) has 10 nights for the price of five at the Chedi Phuket: £1,355pp, including premium-economy flights. Trailfinders (0845 050 5871, Trailfinders - The Travel Experts ) has eight nights for the price of four at the Evason Phuket: £889pp, including flights. And at the luxury end of the market, Carrier (0161 491 7630, Carrier - Home ) has eight nights at the Six Senses Hideaway Yao Noi for £1,985pp, including flights, a saving of £1,590.

I'll believe the story when the tourist feedback comes in.

Thais never slash prices - they put them up... It would indeed be a first if the final bill, as presented, honoured the promise.

How the hell can a price reduction restore confidence ?

If the price of Jaffa Cakes is halved would that mean the UK government is more stable ?

Any monkey can afford to halve room rates after doubling them, but of more interest to nasty sex tourists is the latest steet/bar/agogo prices.

I just e-mailed a well-known world-wide hotel chain in Bangkok. I asked them about the 25% discount that is advertised on their webpage. I got an e-mailed reply that said "no 25% discount exists." I replied to their reservation department by attaching a screen-shot picture of the actual listing of the discount on their own webpage. I got no reply from them. TIT.

No shortage of tourists in Jomtien & Patters... The place is absolutely slammed... I've never seen so many Russians in one place before, outside of Russia that is... Jomtien beach is crawling with them... Some very, very fine examples of the female gender also...

EDIT: Just a personal observation... I can't quote occupancy rates...

well as stated in another thread we did book 3 months worth of flights round trip for one person from BKK to Phuket for a mere 3900b so there are bargins to be had that is seasonal savings of more than 14,000b. They have also extended those rates for another few weeks and for more months at Air Asia..

Now the taxi mafia has to catch up with the rest and come up with some reasonable rates..

I don't regard the lower prices as a discount - I consider them a temporary removal of the greed factor from their normal prices !!!

Even at the reduced prices they are still making a profit.

I used to have colleagues in "marketing" in the travel and accommodation sector and one comment from one of them has stuck in my mind for the last 20 years.

"Whatever the 'free' - 'special offer' - 'discount' is you must remember that it only reduces their "greed" margin.
Nobody in the industry works on less than a 20% clear profit margin"

I still think that this holds true in these troubled times !!!

I think it's a bit unfair to blame everything on PAD, the crap world economy had gotten the numbers of tourists significantly down already, the PAD thing just topped it off.

I've never seen Pattaya quieter, maybe time for (new) glasses seems you have not just double vision but more something like multi-vision seeing stuff in 10 fold or somefink

(or maybe you find the Russians so annoying that even 1 or 2 seem like a lot)
Sometimes my mind wanders, sometimes it leaves completely

Not at all. You get what you pay for and the aircraft, maintenance and quality of the pilots and ground crews reflects the price.

I'll do short hauls on them but not long haul.

    Good point.

Lowered prices don't mean a thing if the Baht is almost third stronger than last year.
