Queen Sirikit Botanical Gardens - Chiang Mai

Now this place is about 25 km to the North of Chiang Mai. If you have an interest in hoticulture it is a fine way to spend a day away from the hustle of Chiang Mai. Take Route 105 T Mae Rim, just through the town hang a left and follow the signs to the Mae Sai Elephant camp. About 2 km past the camp you come to the gardens on your left.

Entrance is 20 baht per person and 30 baht for the car. The picture above is showing the greenhouse section in the gardens. Some of the pictures may not be of high quality as they have been taken from the video that I took.

The gardens were established in 1993. It has 4 walking routes taking between 30 to 60 minutes to complete each one. They are Thai plants and local medicinal herbs, The Arboreta, the climber collection and the Rock Garden and Thai Orchid Nursery. Then of course there is the glasshouse complex - I was in this area for over 2 hours. The pictures I shall post will be of the glasshouse area as it was too hot to go walking around. Hope to do the walks next visit in cooler December, main problem about that though is to get g/f to walk - anything more that 100 yards and she wants a Tuk Tuk!!!

Now this is of the first glasshouse. It contains all specimans of Thai trees and shrubs. All are labeled with the scientific and family name.

When I learn how to post more than one picture per post I will be laughing .

    More please.

To post more than one pic, I do this.

    1. Hit the Picture Icon, paste the URL and hit OK.

    2. Hit Enter twice.

    3. Repeat step one, and so on....

The next glasshouse area was full of various Anthuriums. The pictures are taken at the entrance to it.

At this stage the cassette ran out in the video camera and had to go hare tailing back to the motor to get another. Then forgot to go back into this area - ah the joys of getting old!!!
The next glasshouse contained all begonias, but as it appears that it is not the season for them very little flower - only these.

Thanks Marmite. Well the next one was entirely devoted to Bromeliads and some pictures of them.

There were a couple more glasshouses which I didnot go into. It was then a short walk to a larger glasshouse which contained many aquatic plants - more photos.

No gardens in Thailand would be complete without the orchid house. Here it was combined with various ferns. There were many differant types of orchids on show and some random pictures of these follow.

This glasshouse was really laid out well.

There are a couple more glasshouses - one with various cacti in and the other was the Rain Forest. But time was running short and was near to closing, also we were getting hungry. So it was back the Chiang Mai and the Arusarn market for essential nourishment. .

It's taken me this long to get here, not going to try to run before i can walk!

I lost my pictures somewhere on this laptop but found and downlaoded some more so here are a few more.
This is another big greenhouse full of plants and some orchids,

I have a few more but can't seem to rotate them?

This is a dry area with lots of cacti,

    Umm.. you're joking, right?

Double click on an image (when they are on your PC) and the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer program should kick in. Then hit the rotate button.
