How many moobahns do you drive by in a day were there are maybe sixteen homes, four finished, eight playing home to a colony of itinerant workers, and the other four hulks permanent residence for 20 families? Maybe one has been converted to a noodle stand. The other 96 rai sitting fallow, the water systems, roads and sidewalks crumbling, soi dogs out-number the people, and those poor souls that were stupid enough to buy in are sinking their own damn wells?
Some fuckin' brilliant, enterprising chinese-Thai has decided tat the price of this moobahn is gonna cost 30k/trw. Now along comes Lek and sees that Somchai is selling his land for 30k and decided he can too!! He sets hisself up a little office on his farm and starts building a couple models. Publish a little brochure and now he's 'Selling' his land at 30k!! Now he's in business!
So a couple real brainiac-type Thais will see that the developments in the area are selling for 30k/trw and decide this in an excellent investment and buy a couple of lots. Wait for the rush. it never comes. Out of 30 such fucking developments one might take off. Are these fucking people blind?? Fuckin' idiots, never seem to take in any marketing research nor do they understand that 'For Sale' and 'Selling' are two different things!!!! In the meantime this beautiful land is getting scarred and pockmarked with rotting hulks and dying old water towers that are nothng but wildlife habitats without charm. No self respecting Thai will buy something used or old. So in order to sell even one home some other numb-nuts fucker is going to have start a new development. Bececause the land there is 'selling' for 30k; it's a great Bus Op right?
I see one of the developments going up and I run the other direction. If you want to buy a home here, look for nice older, established moobahns with over 70% occupancy count the dogs and unfinished hulks. If there are more than a couple leave. Or buy out in the sticks and roll your own; stay away from subdivisions. Then you know you have to build, and maintain, your own infrastructure. I would not buy into some whiz-bang new development at any cost.

I thought your land was up north? Did you mean land was for sale at B90,000/ RAI (not wah)? I was under the impression that 1 wah = 4 sq. m. and 1 rai = 400 wah. That would make it very expensive.

The reason that I'm asking, is that trying to get some general ideas of land prices in the Buriram area to build on and price of farm land, but I'll ask in another thread.

back in the eighties I did a fair amount of wrenchin' had $40,000+ invested in tools coulda cut that by about 35% if the states woulda move to metrics in sixties when is was bein' kicked around.

I just find it sad that the American School of Bangkok uses only Imperial measurements for their maths classes in a country that only uses the Metric system.

I wrote a letter asking why they don't teach the Metric system as well and got a snotty reply saying that as an American school, we will stick to the American curriculum. Damn foolish if you ask me, especially as they have an opportunity to educate about both systems (like ISB does).

That is fucking sad and imperialistic in a way, Fucking assholes if you ask me. The metric system is taught in US schools and was even back in the early sixties. While we cling to our Miles and feet automfgrs stateside are converting to metrics. the machines we use to produce everything from newspapers to heavy equipment, even the heavy equipmnet is all metric.
Sounds to me like them folks in that scholl came to teach here because they can;t understand that 10x10= 100 10x10x10=1000, etc. much easier to figure that
1/16 x 16 = 1, 12x1=1, 3x1=1, oh back to 1x 5280=1,

I recall that an effort was made (back in the late '70s I think), to convert from English to Metric measurements in the states. For a while all of the highway signs were showing distances in both miles and kilometers. It didn't ever catch on and I think they dropped it during the Reagan administration.

The problem is that the US is large and so geographically isolated from the rest of the world that most people there don't really feel much pressure to go along with world standardizations.
