    Valentine’s Day ‘not about sex’

    Valentine’s Day ‘not about sex’
    Published on February 07, 2006
Ahead of Valentine’s Day, the Public Health Ministry revealed that a recent study on teenage sex found the average age at which Bangkok high school students lost their virginity was 14.
Public Health Minister Pinij Charusombat said yesterday that many Thai youngsters misread the true meaning of Valentine’s Day, seeing it not as a day to celebrate love but rather as a day to make love.
Pinij said the findings of a 2005 study by the Disease Control Department showed 7.3 per cent of 3,000 students surveyed in 50 secondary schools across Bangkok admitted they had already had sex, with 14 years being the average age for losing virginity.
Pinij said premature sex often led young people to promiscuity. The rate of condom use among young people remained lower than 35 per cent, which meant increasing risks of unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases, such as HIV. At least 35,000 teenagers have contracted HIV over the past two decades, he said.
In response, the ministry will launch a campaign advocating abstinence and safe sex among youngsters by promoting Valentine’s Day as a holiday of platonic love, not carnal desires. On February 9 and 10 at a camp at Mahidol University’s Salaya campus young people will learn about safe sex. On February 14, an anti-STD parade will take place at Major Cineplex Ratchayothin.

The survey was conducted with 1,256 teenagers aged from 12 to 24 years old in Bangkok and vicinities. The aim of the research is to assess the attitude about sexual relations of Thai teenagers upon the upcoming Valentine’s Day on 14 February.

97.3% of the respondents said they know that 14 February is the Valentine’s Day while 2.7% do not. 60.5% of the respondents do not deem the Valentine’s Day a special day; however, other 39.5% thought that the day is special for them.

29.4% of the respondents indicated that they had sexual experiences with their partners before while other 70.6% said they are still virgins. 16.9% said they have a very high chance to have sex on the Valentine’s Day with their lovers while 70.4% thought that the chance is very slim.

Police, Thai Health to deter teenage drinking during Valentine’s Day

BANGKOK, 11 February 2011 (NNT) – The Royal Thai Police and the Thai Health Promotion Foundation (Thai Health) have joined forces to launch a campaign to prevent drinking among teens during the upcoming Valentine’s Day.

As part of the anti-alcohol campaign of the Royal Thai Police and Thai Health in cooperation with the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) and related networks, a caravan of motorcycles was released through the Siam Square shopping district to hand out campaign stickers to encourage Thai youth to refrain from drinking.

National Police Spokesperson Police Major General Prawut Thavornsiri, who presided over the event, stated that measures against teenage drinking would be imposed by the police on this coming Valentine’s Day in compliance with the government’s Pracha Wiwat policy aimed at improving people’s quality of life. Entertainment venues in school areas will be regularly examined while officers will be on guard to keep children out of risky areas. Any teenagers found with suspicious behaviors would be interrogated and taken home by their parents.

A large population of teens tends to express love inappropriately during Valentine’s Day, especially by drinking which often leads to sex. The percentage of regular drinkers among Thai adolescents, aged between 15-19, has reportedly risen by 70 percent, and if no actions are taken, two-thirds of the group could become compulsive drinkers in the next 40 years.
"Slavery is the daughter of darkness; an ignorant people is the blind instrument of its own destruction; ambition and intrigue take advantage of the credulity and inexperience of men who have no political, economic or civil knowledge. They mistake pure illusion for reality, license for freedom, treason for patriotism, vengeance for justice."-Simón Bolívar

Strange way to take a poll; make a completely absurd statement and ask them if they believe it or not. Just asking the silly question might do more harm by creating doubt in their minds.

Sounds like something Fox News might do at home.
