Hat Yai Thai Restaurants

Hat Yai's main claim to fame is that it has sextoys for sale at the local market, this is probably the reason for it being a major tourist stopping off point, it also has one of the largest selection of gun sighting accesories I have ever seen, from lasers to clip on your pistol to scopes to fit onto your rifles, I should imagine with all the killings in Southern Thailand they are doing a roaring trade, the market also has your more normal everyday type of stuff, from knuckle dusters to pirated hard core porn dvds, yep something for everyone

Anyway I decided I should treat my loved one to a gift, so off I wandered to one of the vibrator stalls, they only do the one sort and as you can see it isn't really very big, I mean if you were into making home videos you probably would go for something a bit larger for effect.

I questioned the lovely young sales lady on whether they were any good and she vowed that they were great and my girlfriend would love it, I paid my 180baht and the lovely lady put it into a see through plastic bag, now I am a bit shy when it comes to certain things, and there was noway I was going to walk through Hat Yai night market all the way to my hotel with a poxy vibrator in a clear plastic bag, the situation was resolved and as you can see I got a nice discreet black bag to hide it in.

Getting a bit hungry now it's time to hit 999 Remy restaurant, just your typical Thai restaurant, 3 large chang beers and a pork curry for 180baht still seems like a bargain to me

Quite a fine selection of Thai food all ready to go.



My pork curry with vegetables that I have never seen nor eaten before, I know they were vegetables as the bits never had any legs or things that insects and small fluffy vermin have.



My sordid dark secret package hidden out of view on the chair as you just know someone will ask what have you been buying.



Not really something to be wandering round Hat Yai market in a clear plastic bag is it.

Lets try and get this thread back onto the subject of food and Restaurants in Hat Yai.

Best place to eat has to be round the market area, this is at the train station end of town and about a 200 meter walk from the station, by the train station is a Robinsons and a KFC if your really desperate, but the nearer you get to the market the more food there is.

This place here is pretty damn big and had just about everything you could think of in Thai foods, service I have never seen so fast in Thailand, pretty cheap beer there aswell.



There are several what look like to be Chinese Thai owned seafood restaurants, these were suprisingly clean and not your concrete floor type shacks.



Big ugly bugger lobsters.



Even got food for the poorest of backpackers

I like the southern Thai food, and it sure makes a change from the local staples. We're lucky to have a fair bit of southern food around here, because of the substantial Muslim community around Nernplubwan, but I imagine I'd pig out given a couple of days in Hat Yai and Songhkla.

Seeing as we are in the Hat Yai train station area of the town I think we need a picture of the train station itself, wonder why they decided to spell it Haad Yai?



The bus station is across the otherside of town and is a 30baht motorbike taxi journey away, the touts at the bus station will tell you it's miles away and is a 100baht journey, just walk round the corner and get a driver from there.



Some coconuts for sale opposite the Hollywood disco, got to admit I didn't bother going there.



I have no idea what fruit these are, but a lot of the fruits in Hat Yai are brought over from Malaysia.



A nice display of shellfish and tiny little stickleback type fishes outside one of the Chinese Restaurants.



And some grapes at the market, the food selection is really good there, ie with stuff like imported biscuits and other farang type necesitys.

Time to hit some western style pubs and Restaurants on Thanon Thamnoon Vithi Road, first up you got The Swan, double fronted open shop house done out like a pub, saw people eating there but didn't see a menu, although this was about the busiest place, had a couple of tvs and cheap booze, but as I was totally knackered I went down the road a bit to The Post Laser Disc, this was quite a bit nicer, again a double unit shop house, but closed in and air conned, slightly more expensive but at least I could see a menu.

My mince and mash, yep, can only endure so much Thai food.



There are a few other bars in the area like Brown Sugar and The Pubb so you could do a bit of a bar crawl if you wanted

How were the Toilets?

No idea I didn't try them, but my next couple of threads feature toilets quite heavily, including fantastic shots of what a full sized dustbin looks like half full of used toilet paper, there had to be a lot of poo in there, Mrs Q will love it

Thanks, DD, This brings back memories. I think I used to eat at Brown Sugar (across the road, I think); pretty good Western fare there and very cheap, like the places you mentioned. The wine wasn't too bad either.
That yellow fruit -- was it small like apricots? We had one shady tree of them. Tasted like apricots, too, but I forget the name. There is another Thai place across the street from the King's Hotel called The Ballad (owner is Goong, nice guy who used to be a banker of something in BKK). Trendy looking but prices are also cheap.

Apricots, Jizzer. About the size of a large egg or a little bigger. Kind of tastes like a peach but not as juicy. Real yummy.

To get around in Hat Yai you have the choice of Motor bike taxis or these 4 wheel tuk tuks, basically there really isn't a journey that should cost more than 30baht, although round the bus station the touts seem to think 100baht is more than a fair price.



I think these are little Datsuns that have been converted, but I do wonder how they got rid of the "N" at the end.

Thought I might aswell stick in a picture of The Kings Hotel, this is on Nithak U Thid 1 Road, don't suppose that means a lot to most, anyway about is about a 200 meter walk away from the train station, and down one of the roads on the right opposite the market, so a pretty good place to stay location wise, last time I stayed there it was 400baht per night and that was about 10 years ago, I popped in for a beer last week and asked how much a room was for the night and yes it still is 400baht per night but with +++ whatever that maybe, suppose the +++ is to pay for their computers still quite a nice place, ground floor lobby still has the old marble down on it, so it has a bit of charm.












This restaurant is opposite the bus station, they are all pretty much the same apart from this one had a few birds in cages inside the restaurant, not sure whether that is a good idea in a Thai restaurant with all the chilli being fried, chang beer 30baht and your normal everyday type of Thai food.
