I`m going with some friends to Chiang Khan for christmas week. Has anyone any suggestions on things to do and see, as I`ve never been before. Not really interested in temples, although the name of a good bar is always handy

Have a look at https://teakdoor.com/travellers-tales...ht=Chiang+Khan and https://teakdoor.com/travellers-tales...ht=Chiang+Khan
you might get some ideas there, although I would not really like to stay at Chiang Khan for a week.
I love CHiang Khan.
Spent a week there lounging in the nice guest house. Exploring the mountains, rivers, great place to go.
Are you staying with your friends or at a guesthouse? I have stayed at Pims (Chiang Khan Guest House) an old wooden one over looking the Maekhong. Shared toilets buts if you get the corner room by the river it's a stunning place just to relax.
Sams guesthouse is about 20 metres down. Tall four storey new building. You can have a room with a balcony over looking the river but a shared bathroom (next to the room) or you can have a private bathroom with no balcony and air.
Take the balcony. Sams has three floors - a roof terrace to sit on. Lounge area and they have UBC. Owner is a really nice lady married to a Swedish man.

Prices?
Couple of years back now.
I think Sams was 350 a night maybe 450.
Pims was dirt cheap but that was 4 years or more ago (she is still there) 150 a night.
We stayed at the Chiang Khan Hill Resort back in January 2006
Shop houses in Chiang Khan
Wat Mahatat
Wat Tha Khaek - Kaeng Khut Khu

Those shop houses are why I like it there
Excellent place. Stayed there three nights back in July 1997. Lots of fireflies at night down by the river as I recall.
Here's a few more photos from the area:

Faded mural from inside Wat Mahathat.
These are the rapids at Kaeng Khut Khu.

Tobacco drying along the river.
Nice view of the river.
^ This bar/restaurant is a great place in Chiang Khan - think it is called the Rimnam. The owner/cook runs the place by herself with the help of her 14 yr old son and provides the meals for most of the tourist places in town – she explained how one of the dishes that she’d charged us 20 baht for is sold for about 60 baht down at Sams Guest House and the Chiang Khan Guest House – of course she still only gets the 20 baht. The place is her family home. Her father was a jet pilot in the Thai air force and the walls are covered in pictures of him flying jets - some very good ones there. Her cousin has a coffee shop/bar on the main road that really gets going about 10pm - she'll run you up there on her motorbike if you want.

^ The rapids - great place for a spot of fishing

When I stayed there the first time there was a mad german guy who would swim against the current of the river everyday for an hour.
