Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire

We were in Bangkok's Chinatown last Wednesday and I was surprised to see chestnuts roasting on almost every corner.

Anyone know where they're grown (China?) or how they keep them "fresh" so late in the season?

They will keep for a long time if kept dry and cool, I like em simmered in Dago Red wine for a few hours instead of roasted,, we did get some real good ones when we went down to Pattaya a couple years ago in October.
Don't know where they come from tho..

There's a cheap local Chestnut version in Northern Thailand.

The Chinese ones are more expensive and taste more like the chestnuts you get in Europe. They are either sweetened or naturally sweeter than the ones I was used to (from Southern Germany I think) - they dont grow in Finland and imported ones were expensive.
