    Computer Maintenance

I should start by saying I'm pretty clueless when it comes to computers, just read half way through the re-boot thread until I realised what is was about.

Anyway, I got quite an old PC (5 years), which was quite good at the time, Pentium 4 and 256 something.

From time to time I run ccleaner and the disc defragmenter is running now. My C drive has 72% free space, someone mentioned to me before using too much memory would make it slower.

Is it time I burned all the porn and music onto CD and erase them from the disc? Or how can I find out what takes up all the space, couldn't be games or all those nifty programs from the net I might get around to using one day, could it?

so far from your post I fail to see the problem .

if it ain't broken don't fix it .

ccleaner is a good application and disc defrag is standard good housekeeping .

spend the time watching the porn ..............................

If you are running XP then 256MB of RAM is the absolute minimum.
Fitting more RAM will speed it up.

^memory is fairly cheap for PCs. 2GB is nice round number these days.

    72% free hardrive space isn't a problem

I'm already using 80gb of my new 120GB macbook drive. (including a 32GB partition for windows)

ram is cheap at the moment and 2gb will speed things up nicely for you, then once a month run - Spybot S&D, Ad-ware Se (both free) to clear any unwanted spyware, your anti-virus and finish off with a good old defrag of your C driver, this should keep things tip top

As they say, RAM is dirt cheap, put 1GB if you don't do anything special on your box, such as Photoshop or video editing (I think we can safely rule out the latest games).

Don't worry about freespace until you get to 20-25% free. Don't confuse disk with memory (RAM). Buy an external USB hard drive and back up to it at least weekly.
