UK doctors advised gonorrhoea has turned drug resistant

UK doctors are being told the antibiotic normally used to treat gonorrhoea is no longer effective because the sexually transmitted disease is now largely resistant to it.

The Health Protection Agency says we may be heading to a point when the disease is incurable unless new treatments can be found.

For now, doctors must stop using the usual treatment cefixime and instead use two more powerful antibiotics.

One is a pill and the other a jab.

The HPA say the change is necessary because of increasing resistance.

Tests on samples taken from patients and grown in the laboratory showed reduced susceptibility to the usual antibiotic cefixime in nearly 20% of cases in 2010, compared with just 10% of cases in 2009.

As recently as 2005, no gonorrhoea bacteria with reduced susceptibility to cefixime could be found in the UK.

Just as the new mutant strains of TB have become. It's a f_ucking dangerous world when you've the likes of the zealot do-godders that attempt to rid the world of natural cycles.

Comes back to haunt in a big way.

    Natural cycle? Do-godders ????????

It's not people who "do-god" but people who take antibiotics only until symptoms improve, thus strengthening the surviving bugs.

When I was in Vietnam 43 years ago, doctors were claiming some strains of the clap were antibiotic resistant. They weren't. Just had to jiggle the mix, as they will do again this time.

The difference between then and now, is that very few new antibiotics are coming onto the market, very few are in development and a lot of the newer more powerful ones have some rather unpleasant and permanent side effects like nerve damage. the 60's and 70's were somewhat the golden age for antibiotics.

Antibiotic restiance is a growing problem caused partly by oversubscription and indiscriminate use. As for gonorrhoea always use a condom!

Agreed but I think the options available are reducing as time goes by. 43 years ago antibiotic treatments had only been in use for about 40 years.
