    Helicopter Carrying Brits Crashes In NY River

    A helicopter with five people on board, reportedly including four British tourists, has crashed into the East River off Manhattan, New York police have said.



    The helicopter was carrying four British tourists when it came down in the river

    Three of the passengers and the pilot were quickly rescued. The fourth passenger was killed, according to police.
    According to local NY1 television, two of those rescued are in critical condition, a third is in serious condition and the fourth was treated at the scene.
    A man who witnessed the crash, Dan Sweeney, told the TV station the helicopter was headed for a nearby heliport when it crashed into the river near 34th Street, just south of the United Nations building.
    Weather conditions were clear with a light wind at the time of the crash.

    As the story unfolds, it seems they were submerged for quite a while, so prognosis is not good.

    So one woman trapped in the upturned wreck passed away. The rest survived thanks to a massive and speedy response from the emergency services.

    A British woman has been killed after a helicopter carrying four tourists crashed into New York's East River shortly after take off.
    Witnesses watched as the privately owned Bell helicopter suffered mechanical failure and lost control, before hitting the water in midtown Manhattan.
    Sonia Marra, a UK ex-pat living in Australia, was trapped in the aircraft under the water and her body was recovered by emergency workers at around 4.40pm local time yesterday. It is believed that she was visiting New York with her family to celebrate her 40th birthday.
    Two women passengers, aged 43 and 60, were also seriously injured and are in a critical condition at New York's Bellevue Hospital. Ms Marra's 71 year-old father and a 56 year-old man, believed to be the pilot, have both been released from hospital.
